I use to give a shit about tattoos and what people had, but then I got some myself.

Honestly, so long as it looks good, isnt super fucking cringy and/or in a place that tattoos really dont belong (like your fucking forehead) then its all good. Ive gotten gundam, outlaw star, FF, one piece and other tattoos, but only 1 is showing. I helped with this museum piece one time looking at people who are really into tattoos. It was photos and interviews of people covered head to toe and the like. Some of them said it was a confidence thing for sure, that they feel better about how they look when they can cover up with tats. I don't see a problem with that; life can be pretty shitty and you gotta do whatever makes it more bearable.

For a lot of people though it was the exact opposite, they simply didn't care about how they looked. They drew on their skin for the same reason you'd doodle on a fresh notebook, it's just something to do and they had no attachment to their un-tattoo'd skin.

There was also one guy who had OCD that led to him getting a tattoo every-time something major in his life happened, and it just spiraled out of control. Pretty interesting.

It really depends on what you're getting most of my tattoos have been predawn by the artist or free handed on my body. Generally the artist is only going to trace something directly if that's what you want because it's looked down among artists to just slap someone else's work down and call it a day. Combining images or using reference material as a template to build off of is more common. But for example I have Eliphas Levi's Baphomet on my leg and since it's such an iconic image my artist just tried to replicate it 1 to 1. With something like Rayquaza Id one make sure it's what you really want and 2 let then stylize it a bit and go for their own thing. They're gonna know what fits your body better and serpentine things can look really cool when laid out right
