I died like 10 times playing the first mission on hard. It's actually one of the hardest parts of the whole game imo, since you don't have any chips at all and very few items. It gets easier once you're past it

What is the draw of DMC combat (for lack of a better term)?

I came for the Taro story. It delivered, even if it didn't do what I expected.

I thought it would be a story of humanity, emotions, what separates machines from humans etc. Instead I got a story about losing your whole reason to live and overcoming the resulting nihilism with the realisation that life is worth living. It's a very positive story, in the end.

Still, I admit that the combat (and some obviously rushed parts) was its very weak point and don't claim that Automata is game of the eternity, just of the year. Seriously, first Nier's combat "felt" better with all the blood sprays and magic, even if the mechanics themselves were much more basic.

It's not so much that it's a good game, it's that 95% of people who played it don't realize it was a sequel. A sequel where most of the questions you could have about the plot are answered through understanding the first game.

People have a lot of appreciation for Taro's works, and when you have this cult niche for his games that are suddenly now appreciated due to T&A I can understand why they'd be frustrated. It's wonderful that Nier:A got so much attention since it means we'll get to see more in the future, but precisely none of these people will ever have the tact and drive to go back and play the original. Because of this, there will always be saltiness due to the amount of stupid discussions and questions being asked purely because they don't understand the full story on a fundamental level, and are deemed not true fans.

Origin of a lot of stuff in drakengard is probably from automata and there's some creepy shit with a special secret boss that kinda mimics the seeds of resurrection in drakengard,
but maybe that was unintentional.

Overall the setting and theme is a bit different, it goes downhill towards the end and everything gets kinda crazy but not like giant babies flying through the atmosphere tier.

I loved the original and I loved Automata. They are very different, yes. But what the fuck did you expect from Taro. And I feel like half of /v/ can't into plots if they are not spelled out outright. Doesn't help that Automata is pretty subtle.
