Isn't the fact that it is 26 years old the reason why they did it that way? The whole purpose of the game was to give players who were turned off by Metroid II not having aged well at all a chance to experience it with improved gameplay and better graphics.

Even so, I wouldn't say AM2R is lacking in creativity at some points. Sure it based itself heavily on the original map, but it still gave each area a defined purpose that made sense to the kind of operations the Chozo were performing on the planet. It added a few completely new areas not present in the original game. I particularly liked that you now actually do "complete" the mission of rescuing the science team and rescue team by finding their ships or underground camps and see how shit had hit the fan with them. It gave the game an actual soundtrack, and even if many of the songs in AM2R are based off of songs from other Metroid games, they still do the job well and feel unique.

There was a guy a while back who made code for VX (might be on the newer one) that made it play a bit like Pokemon. His plan was to make recruitable characters but ended up making just about everyone you face recruitable and the large amount to pick from played kinda similar to Pokemon.
