When they played the first game as a kid, it was fascinating to see your favorite disney characters interacting with a relatable kid like Sora. The adventure felt surreal, which was like a drug for the imaginative mind of a kid. In fact, you play the game now and it feels like you're dreaming. A very weird experience for me personally.

its nice to see someone else feels this way. I just played through the first game for the first time on the HD collection and the way the story is presented and the oddness of the level design (the first level being the extremely odd wonderland doesn't really help) gives it a very strange feeling. I kind of clicked in to the oddness after some hours and the combat has this chunky but satisfying feeling that was very unique and enjoyable. Though playing on proud I admit I was getting frustrated at the wonky hitboxes.

The action rpg gameplay is stylish and fast and fun and a good balance between being skill-based and grindable.

There's a reasonable amount of depth in the combat tech through timing and mechanics.
Everything you do also looks pretty goddamn cool, from transforming into different power ranger modes that affect your fighting style, to incredible particle effects (which the series is exceptional at). And the games are often balanced to play well even in restricted difficulties by offering items and equipment that limit exp gain so you can challenge to yourself to yet greater difficulties.

Also, the game has its own sort of style to it.
It is admittedly a bit embarassing, but built around nostalgia.
Disney nostalgia.
JRPG nostalgia.
The entire franchise is honestly built around nostalgia.
There's a self-aware sort of embarassment about your child-like indulgence of mashing two action figures together going "woosh" that is still remarkably satisfying.
Even the character design is really cool its own sort of cringey but satisfying way (muh zippers).
There's a lot of thought put into the art direction and design, even for more minor enemy mobs.

It's very lovingly crafted.
They even do a good job of experimenting with the game mechanics in spinoffs and feeding interesting stuff into future titles.

So yes. The story is kind of stupid. But it's 100% self aware at this point, and now it's just going balls deep into the silly edgy fun shit your teenage self was ashamed to appreciate.

majority of these aren't useful and the enemies aren't ever aggressive enough at any point to require them. There's no point in options if the game never presents any reason to use them. If anything it just pads out the move list that's already filled with pointless moves. If you had any understanding of what makes an action game good you'd know what you were talking about, but what you're doing right now is embarrassingly attempting to conflate large movement options with good gameplay, which is stupid. I always had plenty of reasons to use my movement options on Critical. Magnet and Chicken Little help with lockdown but neither of those last forever. Just slapping an enemy around for 10 seconds in a row is a good way to get killed by the other enemies. They don't all attack constantly but the AI is smart enough to kick you in the balls when it counts if you stop paying attention.

That's not even getting into the super bosses, where having good growth abilities is paramount unless you want to burn all your MP when you don't have to shitting out reflects.
