I remember in an interview Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow didn't actually sell well. Igarashi found out that Nintendo's average age owners are mostly children and few manchildren so they decided to lighten the art direction for later games thus led to the change.

I... I actually enjoy RPG elements as long as they're just candy instead of the game being forcefully balanced around it (see: the arcade D&D games, Megaman X).
