Yes, but they suck unless you're one of the "elite" who dicksuck the mods and agree with the hivemind. So aka shit.

I'd much prefer to stay here, sure there's shitposting here and there, but for the most part /v/ is best place to discuss vidya. The anonymity allows people to be honest, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

the idea isn't that people have to tell the truth, its that they can if they wish to without that truth being binded to their identity.

like i can say here that i'm struggling to pay any bills and im a poor ass motherfucker who spent too much time on video games and that i want to kill myself at some point in the future and that even though I'm really good at improving at things I can't stand working a normal job without wanting to drive off the road and end my life

I want off this ride. We should just fix language as it is now. If you want a new word then make a new word but don't ruin the old ones anymore.

Or at least do the language evolution when I'm not around

>post on forum
>forum celebrity poster with 13k posts disagrees with you
pic related
forums had their time but they're outdated. people dont wanna sign up to a single hivemind community with seniority principles anymore but rather drop in and out on their own volition when they wanna talk about something.
reddit is a mix between traditional forums and 4chan's system of open style posting, but still shit because voting promotes hivemind thinking, karma and heavy moderation.
4chan is quite literally the perfect example of how its done:
>completely open
>no accounts required
>see something interesting in a game, make a post about it
>no need to search for the right subforum/megathreads first
>threads get bumped by interest and fall of when interest is lost or the thread reaches bump limit
>no "why do you necro this thread?"
>no stagnating content because everything is redirected to old threads
>can hide posts and threads you dont like
no matter how angry /v/ makes some of the more insecure anons, just from the design aspect, imageboards are the best thing.

The only forums I bother with is some backwater GM WoW server forum and Spacebattles, which is a sci-fi forum from the 90s.

That forum is okay, thing is that you cannot voice your real opinion on almost anything because the moderators don't like it, can't even cut loose a bit like you do on here (on purpose, they don't like this site.) but meanwhile people from tumblr and plebbit can just post their shit and use their cultural norms everywhere with no reprecussions, the cultural stuff being why we can't do that.

Otherwise it's an alright forum, trolling rarely happens, intelligent discussion is common and people don't immediately go back to [embarrassing event] if you say something, at leadt if it wasn't stirring up enough. Might seem like an edgy opinion but I was once warned for wanting to cut foreign aid to developing countries in general, since we have lots of internal issues where I live that could use it better than literally whos.

Space Battles is one of the better somewhat populated forums still around, although it still suffers from all the bad things every other one does it balances out with enough vaguely interesting nerd shit to be worth the visit sometimes. It used to be more centrist before swinging left thanks to the latest american election though. Just gotta ignore the furries and bronies and capeshit fanboys.

>(on purpose, they don't like this site.)
This rule they had always annoyed me, basically its meant as a rule to ban 'low effort posts' but of course respected members can make as many vapid shitposts as they like, just visit almost any thread and plenty of the posts are regurgitating internal memes and lame one liner jokes anyway.

Moot was right about anonymity. Being anon removes the bias that comes with having a reputation from previous posts and your high ass post count. It eventually becomes clique central and cocksucking. 4chan has its own sea of troubles, but the simple fact that it's anon makes it 10000x better than the old forums I used to visit. I'll take a million shitposting threads over 10k post count vet cocksucking any day.

>4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images. 4chan's collaborative-community format was inspired by one of the most popular forums in Japan, Futaba Channel. Different boards are dedicated to different topics, from Japanese anime, manga, and culture to videogames, music, and photography. Users do not need to register an account before participating in the community.

try to tell someone to "lurk moar" these days can and often will result in a full blown reddit-tier blowout.
Its especially bad on /vg/, which attracts way more normies than /v/, due to being game specific.
Some time ago one faggot had a complete meltdown in the /eagg/, when he got told to lurk moar. Thats the future we chose

Speaking of all things Sonic the official Sega forums were some horrendous cancer. I just wanted to talk vidya gaems and PSU when it was still going but good lord they just let epic shitposters run amok and derail every thread ever.

What discussion? Nobody comes here for discussion.

Nowadays any non-conventional /v/ opinion will be showered with ``you are reddit, you are newfag, you are phoneposter, this is bait!" replies.

This used to happen to some extent in the past but today you can't say anything without being called reddit, even if your opinion has nothing to do with reddit at all.

There are no knowledgeable people here, the ``discussion" is just namecalling with random info graphics and pointless links being spammed and even that is being replaced with shit like "this is bait".

The only difference I see between current 4chan and 'old' 4chan is that today the humor and general vibe of the website is ironic and cynical recycling old content with more layers of irony, old 4chan felt a lot more juvenile, silly and "random" and less malicious.
>>
Yeah, there are not many good ones though. And unless you like something in particular, the worst are usually general vidya forums. The smaller, tighter one subject or series community are usually better overall. I miss forums and I miss IRC, but I'm never leaving this fuckhole.

It's easy actually. 4chan archives died and got lost more than once, they will die again. It's not like this is the library of Alexandria or some shit, posts here are not that valuable and they're in really big quantities. Enough time passes and they'll either fall or be completely drowned in a sea of irrelevant information.

Screencaps can still exist though, those will last longer, and there's nothing compromising anonymity with them.

Guys, I think I have found the solution:
- Pay $5 to register
- Posts are anonymous to other users and to moderators
- Moderators can vote to ban
- If you are banned you have to register again
It'll be like SA that doesn't suck.

They used to be pro-GG because Gamer Gate meant something completely different. It was about ethical journalism in videogames, which to this day is corrupt to the core. Thanks to 4chan's anonymity, shitposters had a field day turning it into an ironic debate about gender problems and women being cancer for videogames. The rest of the world, not in the know about the "everything is shitposting" dynamics of 4chan, overreacted.
Shitposters thought the overreaction was funny, so they kept going. Within weeks, GG was turned on its head to be "we hate women feminism sucks" and the mainstream media gladly took that as a common enemy, and why wouldn't they.

Once again, shitposting ruined what could've potentially been a good thing.

I'm saying that you don't need to "prevent them" because they'll be temporary things that will eventually fall off by themselves. And when that happens, anonymity is restored.

>>385008185
You're not welcome here.
>>
>>385007887
I'm not saying that didn't happen, and I should've added that in all fairness.
The problem was that people on 4chan did nothing to defend themselves from said accusations, but instead fueled it by making fun of them "ironically".
Calling that Zoe woman a cunt and making thread upon thread talking about wanting to hatefuck her was obviously in jest to rile up her and the journos and we know that. They might know that as well, but it made it so easy to make this place look as legitimately anti-women and anti-diversity and whatever, when in reality, and I wish more people would get their heads around this, 4chan is ironically anti-everything if there is entertainment to be derived from that stance.

In this case it bit us all in the ass.

I have a lot of faith in a lot of people's universal and unending will to shitpost on 4chan.

Depends on the board, I think. /v/ is hard to archive and continue preserving due to the sheer volume, but most of /g/ has been archived since at least 2012, and the archives have survived multiple server crashes and changing owners. It is only a matter of time until some dude dumps the database and puts it on archive.org, which keeps everything forever and collects enough in donations that it probably won't go bankrupt in our lifetime.

Do you remember it though? That kind'a humour would be considered "Cringey" Reddit tier humour these days.

It was literally "Epic bread OP" "Toasting in an Epic Bread" and shit like that. "I'MA FIRING MY LASER!"

It's hard to believe those ideas were ever not stale as shit, but people got sick of them all the same and that kind'a culture caught onto the sites of places that 4chan tends to dislike. So 4chan has now disowned a huge part of what was it's original identity, stupid, low brow humour.

What did you expect from a Sonic forum? You're better off discussing it on sites that are more generally meant for video games or other topics. Otherwise you're only going to run into the types of people that give the Sonic fanbase it's horrible but accurate reputation.

In 2006-2009 there was a distinct period where it seemed like 4chan would go big, the way 2ch did in Japan. Then came Facebook. The next age after Facebook's is already here and it's about mobile messengers and special-purpose apps like Tinder. I know college kids lamented the recent death of YikYak. It was their anonymous discussion platform. I think mobile AR worlds may be next, at least for the younger crowd.

Have you ever seen how much the thread degenerate when they become "generals"?
Imagine that but in an isolated medium like discord where they don't have to worry about being looked down upon by the rest of the community.

If you want to have generals you either establish some sort of extra control or you'll have to suffer what happened to the monstergirl threads in /jp/.

It's what any circlejerk community that mainly consists of disfunctional autists naturally devolves to. That's why generals are horrible, and making an entire board to accommodate those kinds of people instead of banning and ostracizing them was one of the stupidest moves in this website's history.

>it also means shitstorms literally last for THREE fucking days in there
>sometimes even four or more

Only 6 months later they had become one of the most reactionary communities I've seen.
Every time KC (the author of the MG Encyclopedia) created a new girl, there would be a shitstorm for days as domfags and subfags would throw at each others throats claiming the new girl "belonged" to their side.
The most hilarious thing is that they have their own "threadcanon" regarding the girls, which deviates from the original creators (mainly KC), but if someone does something different from their headcanon (example: a story of a mg with a different personality) a new shitstorm starts. Think about it: they're so autistic they throw fits when someone doesn't follow their HEADCANON.

Can you even imagine how horrible is to follow a thread where there are hundreds of topics that can trigger a shitstorm, and each of those shitflingings can last more than 3 days? The last time I was there, there had been 5 consecutive shitstorms for weeks because one autist kept trying to "kill" a regenerating monster with bullets and everyone kept taking the same bait after three weeks. THREE WEEKS.
Only the drawfags were worth it, and even then I abandoned that place three years ago and never looked back.

Well, a good part of those threads thought it was so infuriating they started to fight between themselves. For days. And repeated times over weeks whenever the topic was brought up.

And that's only one example of the things that literally "trigger" their entire thread.
I left those generals years ago, but I heard from other guy that nowadays they're triggered by monstergirls lesbian porn things. Imagine the autism.

I've been here since 2007. All I have to say is that people used to come to the site for /v/ and /pol/ was a containment board to prevent retarded political derails, and nowadays people come to the site for /pol/ and /v/ is just a place for those crossboard posters to talk about video games.

reddit did invade us, but only in the way that /pol/ posting exploded afterwards. nu /v/, /pol/, reddit, 9gag, all the same people. history is revised by the majority
>>
>>384999040
yeah take a hint
>>
>>385019358
I don't care who posts or where they come from as long as there can be a discussion without someone crying to a mod because their actually stupid post got called stupid. That's all I've ever wanted.

No post counts, no stars, no obnoxious gif signatures. Just pure, unfiltered hate and sharing opinions without judgement. But still having a constructive talk. Forums are capable of having said talks, but don't criticize someone's blatant stupidity or else banned.
>>
>>385019965
>Anon's Sister

>>
>>385019965
The problem is that you either need moderation or everyone actually acting in good faith to have those constructive talks. The only constructive talks about video games on this site are on /vr/ because nobody goes over there. /v/ threads just turn into mob rule circlejerks where individual opinions are drowned out and held as less valid because there are less voices able to vouch for them in good faith.
>>
Imageboards are forums you semantic retards. Every place where people gather to discuss ideas is a forum. Your social media wall is a forum.

How though? Its not like a bunch of people saying one thing doesn't literally prevent you from seeing or replying to the people you think are worth replying to. I've had plenty of enjoyable and meaningful conversations with people on this board and I honestly don't see how people can't.
>>
>>385021738
>Its not like a bunch of people saying one thing doesn't literally prevent you from seeing or replying to the people you think are worth replying to.
Except when it's only 2 people wanting to discuss something and 90% of the thread is I want to lick my waifu's arm pits. It's not a group discussion, it's like whispering in a room full of screaming children.

The appeal of threads here is group discussion. Generally one will go in favor of what's mostly being talked about.
>>
>>385022030
Ah I see the difference in perspective then. I have long since given up on group discussion and see /v/ as a place fill with a small amount of intelligent people and a great deal of screaming children. While unpleasant, the screaming children serve as a natural immune-system, driving out the thin-skinned or narcissistic (in the e-peen sense) to enough of an extent that the people who want to have an intelligent conversation can do so without the fear of censorship. Shitposts are like the fertile soil from which springs constructive discussion. Though there is often a great deal more tonnage of fertilizer than there is product, the end result is still worth it as freedom of speech is maintained.
>>
>>385022458

>>
>>385022562
I've found the viewpoint to be very liberating. I don't become bothered by the shitposting, but see it as just another natural process of 4chan's community, required for its survival. And to drive home the point, look at what's just happened here. The both of us had a fairly constructive conversation, despite all the shitposting in this thread.

>>385022842
Groupthink also is something that only exist because one gives into it. So long as you maintain your own opinions regardless of the groupthink, you can ride it rather than be subsumed by it and find other like-minded individuals doing the same. See >>385022458

It's pretty naive to assume you have that much control over your mind. Your own opinion is subtly shaped by others' reactions. Chances are, you aren't going to exercise enough constant vigilance to correct for it because it's too much effort.

When I was part of one it was basically a facebook 2.0 thing where people would do 4chan repost for le upboats and others would talk about their failed lives. I remember one guy talking about suiciding and other exploding because he was one of these blacks that their skin tone was everything.
>>
>>385024509
This. In fact the "screaming children" are what attracts people to this site in the first place these days.
>>
>>384987652
Vidya forums still exist in a new form through Discord.
>>
>>385023801
No problem, I'm glad that I gave you a new perspective. I know it might seem grandiose of me, but I earnestly hope this point of view becomes more prevalent in the community.

>>385023912
Of course. There's no way I can prevent my mind from remaining completely uninfluenced. But through awareness of the phenomenon and an appropriate level of vigilance, I can catch the worst of it. And if I do catch myself succumbing to the more subtle effects, I hope I would be willing to re-evaluate myself to ensure my beliefs remain my own. I know I won't be perfect about it, but I intent to try as best as I am able on principle.

>>385024509
>>385024616

And yet, here I am, having an enjoyable and stimulating conversation with likeminded peers despite the constant screeching. I'll admit that its possible that the screeching is what is now attracting people, but because that sort of behavior is so obvious, its easy to recognize for what it is, and thus avoid it. The more insidious sort of quality deterioration is the kind that appears reasonable and intelligent at first glance but suffocates the community before they realize it, like heavyhanded moderation "for the good of the community" and the existence of named profiles in general.

What forums do you browse fellow /v/irgins?
>>
>>385028021
none
>>
>>384987652
yeah but if you're used to posting on 4chan, they will come off as safespaces for children in some cases. I've lurked some forums where they want people to follow a certain posting etiquette and avoid strongly expressive words. Seen some forums that explicitly ask you not to post in a thread if you have a different opinion than the OP. Then there's the forums where if the admins don't like you they will make any excuse to close your threads or stir shit up so they have a reason to ban you.

>hurr don't argue with admins, we have the final say in anything
>>
>>385028021
None. Last one I used to browse were the official gearbox forums back in 2012-13. There was a very active community that debugged a lot of shit in damage formulas and min-maxing going around. There were new stuff constantly discovered and there were even raid boss solo speed kill leaderboards to see who could break the game in more absurd ways at the endgame. It was fun.

Guess what happened? Drama involving the cancerous faggots that got popular in twitch and youtube through that forum's userbase. Thankfully it happened at the end of that game's content release cycle so the community had already started dying out. Then they switched to curse and killed the old forums and I never visited again.
