In my experience you don't even have to fuse particularly good demons. Just fuse as often as you can, be somewhat mindful of everything's element resistances and you can usually bullshit your way through somehow.

Demon fusion in most Megaten games isn't something you need to do beyond "fuse the highest level available" and "mix up strengths and weaknesses" to beat the game. It's one of those rare mechanics that causes people to overthink their game while having an ADHD like attention span with the game at the same time.

That being said, personally, demon fusion has always been the mechanic that kept drawing be back to SMT. The best ones in my opinion are the ones that go heavy into demon fusion.
