Rydia was an okay character. But I preferred Rosa and Porom. It is funny though that in FFIV, all the men are fucking idiots who want to kill themselves. And all the women are level-headed and caring. Guess I shouldn't be surprised given who the writer was.

No, he really doesn't. He still just stands there in cutscenes and lets everyone talk for him. Four different people all 'sacrifice' themselves to ave him while he just sits there and does nothing. Then of course none of them are really dead in the end. The only guy who really died killed himself for revenge. And even that fool somehow comes back in the Dragon Ball level "give me your power!" ending.

Cecil's whole role in the story is pretty much being told what to do, failing at it, then blaming himself. Until in the very last fight he finally succeeds, because there's no longer a plot point to make him lose.

The After Years wasn't very kind to Cecil either. He gets his castle invaded and then his ass kicked by a clone of Rydia, who then proceeds to imprison and brainwash him for about 90% of the game. When you finally get him back, he's a physical and mental wreck, which is reflected in his heavily nerfed stats and inability to use his skills. It takes Golbez nearly (or actually if Ceodore and Rosa aren't present) getting killed to get him back into the game for real.

Aside Edward and Palom, who was After Years even kind to? Closest one with those two is Edge and he's straddled down with doing same ol shit like everyone else with useless yes men. Edward was treated super good since they made everyone retarded even when it made no sense and kept him having a modicum of common sense.
