Not him, but yeah, I am. Metal Gear Solid 1 isn't very convoluted. 2 and 4 are, but 1 is relatively straightforward desu, and what strangeness there is can easily be changed to fit a movie.

You need to replay 2. Its plot is very streamlined and straightforward. It plays with the fact that it's a sequel but other than that it's pretty much as straightforward as 1 is. In fact it takes many of 1's elements and copies them beat for beat. Only 4 is convoluted and that's because Kojima was trying to tie up too many loose ends, even those that didn't need tying up, and he tried to make pieces fit together that didn't need to at all, like the support team of 3 having a huge role in the backstory of the games.

Yeah, you're right, convoluted isn't the right word. Complex, maybe. There's a lot of deep themes and metanarrative stuff at play, but it never really feels convoluted or hard to follow.
