Same. I pretty much drop the series at gen 3. Recently I've been dabbling in it again though. Have to play catch-up with all of the abilities and weather and type specific stuff. I didn't know electric types can't be paralyzed or that burning opponents drops their physical attack. And apparently there are archetypes like walls and sweepers. I don't know all of them. Nor do I think I understand how Buffs work. I never really noticed a difference when my attack rose or reduced by one but apparently this part of the game is really important.

They're mostly talking about PVP. Grass doesn't have as many toys in comparison to fire or water. For of vanilla game Bulbasaur is great and probably the easy mode of the game. Although Exeggutor could probably do his job better.

The nice thing about the Water/Fire/Grass triangle is that it's balanced. If one type is straight up immune to the other while the other types resist or are neutral then the balance is apparently lost (you could compensate by adjusting base stat totals but (1) children won't know that and think it's imbalanced, and (2) it ruins the symmetrical aesthetic of the starters). It's not tradition, it's aesthetically appealing game design.

Rock, Flying, Fighting is probably the "best" triangle where each resists one and is vulnerable to the other.

Most others either have an immunity (frequently psychic-dark, although I've seen ground-flying mentioned) or don't have one type resisting another, such as bug-rock.

The biggest concern with Rock, Flying, Fighting is that Rock is highly effective against the common normal type attacks you see early on, and Fighting is highly effective against the normal type pokemon you run across. So you'll have some strange matchups early on in the game, which could intentionally be good or bad depending on what you are looking for.
