Every Rune Factory game is like that though. The main game is the progression from a small barely used farm into a rich powerful hero forging his own god blades to kill dragons and shit. Rune Factory 3 has a clear monster hybrid plot gimmick that gives the main cast something unique. RF3 has a fairly large pool to pick from too and you can coax some interesting dialogue from some when kind of cheating on them before marriage.

Rune Factory 4 reduces the options mainly because it has to cater for both male and female protagonists. The character options are back to being fairly generic with some exceptions. Rune Factory 4's main strength is how much fucking content it has. After 'completing' the plot the first time you'll actually find out you aren't even half done and the game ramps the fuck up in difficulty and branches out some more.

Rune Factory sequels all try some interesting gimmicks at least. The original RF is the base all the others build on (and a spiritual successor to Harvest Moon itself).

RF2 has you locks your progress until you get married and find out that was the prologue only to basically make you follow on your main character as their child then unlocks the rest of the game.

RF3 has the whole monster hybrid deal with you being able to turn into a monster.

RF4 mainly puts you in charge of the town through ways of replacing the local nobility.

RF Oceans goes right off on one by making you play both the male and female protagonist as a single character, romance is locked until you fix that in the plot and then choose which of the two you actually want to play. It's fucking wierd as basically the girl's spirit is stuck in the boys body then when you get her body back you can pick to be her or the boy and the other gets to be a NPC you can romance. Honestly a kind of cool and weird idea, shame about the farming gameplay though.

Rune Factory 4 is like a celebration of all the other games they made, it even references them by having other game NPCs turn up, their history being mentioned in plot and their music being options in your menu after you 'complete' the game.

I actually liked the event system in Rune Factory 4. I know a lot of people had issues with it because marriage requires seeing certain romantic events and all NPC events are randomized. Personally I took my time so it was never a problem and a lot of the events really give you a nice sense of how everyone interacts with each other which was one of the stronger points of the game.

I also like that dynamic weather was changed so you no longer got fucking storms for like two hours in the middle of summer after planting your crops. Storms always come with a warning from NPCs and you could get a option later to actually push them away (or bring them) if you used influence.

Another thing I liked not unique to RF4, but rather a feature of later RF games is the way dialogue with villagers changes daily. Sure eventually after a year it'll loop around again but it really helps that you can talk to them every day for affection and get different lines about local events. Plot progress always gave the villagers reaction lines for that day and random events could do the same too. It made the village feel like a community

RF4 probably had the most initially boring cast for me, but there's quite a bit of additional depth to them just by the sheer amount of lines, events, etc. that they get. I've probably played through the game, like, 3-4 times now and I still find a few new things each time. There's just so much there. Paradoxically it ends up having my favorite cast because of all those lines, even in spite of myself preferring the designs in RFF, and liking the quriks/archetypes presented in RF3 more (even if they were a little LOLSORANDUMBXD at times)

I suppose this is the benefit of a long-running series which [actually] builds upon a skeleton with each iteration, adding new features, and actively developing upon already-existing ones. RFF did a lot of things right, but there's still a considerable amount of issues with it which were solved in latter installments - mostly convenience things, but there's also some more in-depth changes that can kind of sour my experience replaying RFF; there's just simply not enough lines and events in the game. A lot of the months are pretty empty, even after you go through your first year. Though I suppose this is likely because it's basically impossible to not work your ass off in RFF, as the daily routine usually has you occupied in that game until the late afternoon/early evening because of how in-fucking-convenient it can be.

Best designs, best music, best general atmosphere... but generally an inconvenience to play. In my opinion, it's the least comfy and most irritating RF.

Yeah, RF4 really made some great quality of life improvements and throughout the Rune Factory series you can see those improvements from game to game, I don't think I could go back and play the original RF again without some frustrations. That said, by RF3 most of the important changes were made which is why going back to play it isn't a huge pain.

That feeling when you're playing RF4 in hard mode, the difficulty curve kicks back and you find a way to craft more broken shit to fuck it right back. I don't think I even made the most broken magical rods until the very end when I unlocked that bullshit dungeon mode in your house after completing all the post game plot. I mostly just abused prism spell and sword+shield. Also farming, always farming, always getting those stat ups from crops.

My biggest advice for Oceans if you get it is to keep in mind that romance events can't happen until you complete the main plot. The reason becomes kind of obvious really but still you will find your affection stat capped after a point and if you don't realize it you could waste time trying to get married when it's not actually possible until later.

As for the game, the 3D makes the place look a little barren at times, but its functional. The golem exploration and combat is a neat gimmick, the dungeons are ok. Final boss fight was sort of hype I guess.

Oh, and try getting those elemental rune fairy things as pets, they are nuts.

The console games are significantly slower-paced than the handheld ones. Time ticks by much slower and everything takes a lot longer to do. Frontier has more focus on farming, while Oceans makes farming largely monster-based and focuses on exploration and dungeon diving.

After Act 2 you need to trigger a specific event for Act 3 to commence, though it's not too much of an Act, just a gigantic end-game dungeon which will kick your ass. Google the Act 3 trigger for more details

You should probably play some Harvest Moon games first if you never have. They're just about farming basically whereas Rune Factory is an evolution of that with added dungeon crawling. It'll be very hard to play Harvest Moon games after Rune Factory. I only liked the PS1 Harvest Moon though, so I can only recommend that one.

If it's making income, farming is the best way in both Harvest Moon and Rune Factory.

But this isn't as tedious as it sounds. For example in RF3, once your cows become very close to you, their high level milk drops will give you enough income to spend for a very long time, as well as regenerating crops like the crystal flowers.

What makes RF so fun is that quests aren't just limited to farming and fetching, there are also quests that require fighting and hunting.
