Is smash a fighting game?

It's a ring-out game.
I think there was an article on SourceGaming where Sakurai/the Japanese had a different term for Smash than fighting game, but I forget.

Yes it's a fighting game, no matter how hard any faggot doesn't want it to be it is a fighting game.

The only way a character can die without fighting is suicide, and if you get that obtuse, then any FPS that allows you to kill yourself with grenades or allows you to use melee isn't technically a shooter since "the shooting is optional if the characters can die by other means."

Depends. When people say "fighting game" they just mean a game that branched off from Street Fighter 2 in some way.

Smash is nothing like sf2 and takes very little from it if anything. It's not a fighting game.
