Everytime a Disgaea or JRPG thread pops up, everyone shits on this game. Calls it the worst in the series, the worst cast, worst story, etc.

While I think the opposite. Mao is my favorite Disgaea main character, it has my favorite cast of characters, and I thought the game was pretty good gameplay-wise.

I don't hate 64 or Sunshine but I do think that Mario is at its best with focused, gimmick-based levels. Galaxy 2 is my favorite Mario for that reason and Odyssey seems to be moving as far in the opposite direction as possible.

I want to like the borderlands series but I have never been more frustrated by a game as I was any time almost any character spoke in borderlands 2. I wouldn't care if the writing was shit but it isn't shit, it's painful. It feels like the entire game was written with the intention of making everyone playing it stop playing it. To be honest, I don't really think there's much of a ludonarrative dissonance in IV anyway; it's not like Niko is specifically depressed because he has to kill people and he hates killing, he's depressed because he feels like he's permanently emotionally stunted and empty with no possibility for escape and because he can't ever find happiness because he doesn't see the value of the lives of others since he's robbed people of those lives so many times. So he feels like he can never truly relate to other people, and that's one reason why killing them makes him feel nothing.

He's not really the type to drop everything and go on rampages, but that's basically all the protags except Trevor. But none of them have any reservations about killing for what they see as a worthwhile purpose or killing whoever stands in the way of that purpose, whether it's for their job or for their friends and family. I think every GTA protagonist suits their universe very well.

Yep. The writing is terrible. But for me it's a whole nother issue. I wanted to beat the game on all difficulties, and I did, up until Ultimate Vault Hunter. I got so far, but just gave up. Shit's fucking insane. With how much tracking enemy attacks have and the fact that they kill you almost instantly. So many bosses were just a fucking endurance test of seeming trial and error.

I just raged. Calmed down, turned it off. And the next day I looked at it... and said, never again. Uninstall. I beat the shit as much as it deserved. Actually more than it deserved if that's what it was gonna turn into. So not a care in the world. But I tell people not to bother with it, these days. Especially since they still don't have good quality drops over 90% of the time. Like why even have 1000's of unique guns if you never give them to the player?

If you weren't born in early 90's or earlier obviously this game goes over everyone's head. It is a lot of nostalgia, but I got some feels and I enjoyed exploring the house. I don't buy into the "there has to be a fail state" meme. But it has it's issues. They try to artificially impose some minor horror. And being alone in a dark house does make it feel a little uncomfortable at first, but once you realize that's not what it is, it's fine.

The density of Fallout 4's world is insane, especially given Bethesda's team size. The game has its problems with dialogue options but I legitimately don't know why so many people hate the game to its core - the combat is fun, the world is detailed and gorgeous, you can influence the story more than any other Bethesda game, it has 20 times less essential NPCs than Skyrim (which is, in fairness, still 10 more than New Vegas), and the DLC is damn good.

I think that searching for your lost son is a perfectly reasonable hook for the beginning of the story but I agree that it overstayed its welcome. If you had found him at the end of the first act instead of the end of the second it could've been a non-issue.
Also, I sort of disagree with all of the major factions being retarded, I still think that the Institute was 100% the best option. I really really hate the forced story too, and it fails hard as an rpg for a few reasons but mostly that one. However despite that the exploration is really fun and the combat is the best of any of their games hands down and different builds/characters can play really differently. I'll tell you a story about the son storyline.

I was on my second playthrough, where I wanted to put off the main quests for a while and explore.
Now, I wanted to do the main quests at some point. So I was purposefully avoiding Diamond City. But I accidentally came across the Vault holding Nick Valentine without realizing. After I'd cleared it out, I found the robot and thought to myself "I wonder what my character will say, now that he has no idea who Nick is?"
He started blathering about his son, and how Nick the Great Detective could help with the search.

I always felt the dissonance was strongest in IV because Niko explicitly states that he wants to get away from violence and to get revenge, while every other protagonist's general goal is to make something of themselves on top of getting revenge.

None of them mind killing people, or have the same disdain for violence like Niko. and in general, because of disdain in himself that violence is all he's good at, rather than disdain for violence itself.

He wants to get away from violence because he wants to see if there's anything good about him besides being good at killing people, and he does it by doing it much the same way as you said the other protagonists' goals were: making something of yourself in GTA IV was achieving the American Dream, and that was his main goal, to close the chapter on his past life by living out the American Dream with Roman, who he had thought already achieved it. Looking for the one who betrayed his squad was a big bonus to that.

Niko is definitely an angry character; it's just that he knows how to keep a level head when discussing business manners, which is in contrast to Michael. You see his anger come out in his dialogue during combat, which suggests that when pushed, he is indeed quite a short-tempered person, or when somebody messes with his family, or when his loyalty is questioned. So it's not really stated, it's more or less implied.

And another thing, Niko is a hypocrite, and that hypocrisy is very much a reoccurring theme during the story; look at things like the interaction between him and Darko, how he treats the Three Leaf Clover heist as "something fun" despite wanting to settle down, how he comforts the McRearys after one of their brothers dies but he's the one who killed them. I thought his hypocrisy was very much intended and one of his character flaws rather than bad writing.

I love Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance, and I put it marginally higher than Circle of the Moon.

It took the few things that Bioshock did well as a novel game filling it's new niche and dumpstered them, revealing the flaws while they tried to brute force a story they considered their godlike writing.

The aesthetic of the first two bioshocks carried it and allowed for an edgydark world. Infinite was trying too hard to be it's own thing without enough difference from 1&2.

Well here, it's basically him getting angry over car crashes that he caused, admittedly that may be due to the AI rather than some deeper commentary, but I feel like it was worth bringing up. It's hard to explain really.

I got into it when I was young enough to be blind to how autism-coded it looks and it's genuinly fun in the way you can appreciate a cliche book if that makes sense.

The combat and gameplay mechanics are intuitive and relatively balanced (breakable if you try) but it's something if a combat sandbox with a pulling multiverse story going on in the background with many of your childhood favorite characters.
