I gonna be somewhat contrary and say the idea wasn't completely terrible in principle. The fundamental problem though in my opinion is that they were at the completely wrong part of the mobile hardware S-curve, and they compounded that sin by misunderstanding what most of the population wants from an appliance TV-box, which is dependability and stability and not having to think about it or upgrade for a good number of years.

But they picked an exponential part of the curve, back when we were literally seeing 4-7x GPU and doubling CPU improvements IN ONE SINGLE YEAR. Like the PC during the truly insane era but even more so. iPhone/Android smartphone suddenly boosted the super lagging shit phone market into high gear and they had tons of stuff to harvest from the PC world just to reach parity. So Tegra 2 was basically trash before the Ouya could even release.

Eventually (well, already) of course the point of diminishing returns hits and like the PC smartphones are going to the flat part of the S. Like, 10-30% a year or something, adds up over the course of 3+ gens but stuff can actually last for a while, even if it's cheap. Ouya was wrong hardware, badly executed, at the wrong time. Good riddance.

To this day, I refuse to believe this was a conscious business decision, and not just an elaborate Kickstarter scam.

The market is weird right now. There is theoretically some product that could exist which is a bridge between a full blown PC and a dedicated console. A $100 android box seems like an okay idea on paper, they fucked up somewhere along the line though. Maybe if this was pushed by say Amazon it would have worked out as a normie "home entertainment system." Have it integrate with Alexa and all that bullshit too.
>>
It's getting a relaunch under a new brand this year though so it's not really dead

like other anons said:
1. execution would have had to be better

2. market entry was bad timed. if you made a $100-200 android box with 2017 hardware, it'd be good for a while, couple gigs of ram, decent apu etc. not top of line but should be ok. but ouya was announced 2012. they didn't even have 64-bit ARM back then that is how fast shit has changed. with contract phones changed every few years that mainly are for not vidya? sure. console hardware time? lol no.

Idea was okay contrary to what the internet has been saying. The execution is what killed it.

Because I'm waiting for my queue here's a short story of the success and failure of the Ouya.

Ouya was first announced when android TV boxes/Roku boxes/whatever are not even a thing ,controllers for android phones are just starting to get released and smart TVs are still not a mainstay feature on TVs and HD TVs are just starting to gain the majority of TVs. This was also the age where most gaming consoles cost hundreds of dollars compared to $99 for the Ouya. However the primary reason why marketing was succesful was the Ouya LITERALLY marketing it as an emulator console. Remember this was before the raspberry pi so an emulation bo means building yourself a PC.

I will skip past the part where they got their millions on crowdfunding because everyone knows that and jump from near release, release and post-release where it failed.

Someone higher-up in the Ouya company thought that they can compete with the big 3 consoles. Instead of just making it as a sole android TV hybrid game console where you can download games in the google market, they opted to make their own ecosystem, find devs that will make their exclusives for them and more. So instead of having millions of games/apps at launch, it only had a dozen or so. When it was released, the software is buggy as fuck and it was not fixed thoroughly until a few months later so that means negative media attention. Also didn't help that they wasted millions of dollars just for having a booth near a gaming convention as well as advertising for such and when they tried to relegate it as a media box, it was already too late.

>Hardware outdated
When it was released, hardware was not that outdated. One must remember that most people that had phones back then and even today don't buy phones every 3 months. Hardware was enough to run 99% of android apps/games out there.
>>
>>384956957
>Hardware was enough to run 99% of android apps/games out there.
But it wasn't very good in absolute terms or when compared to the "real" consoles.
>>
>>384958534
And?
>>
>>384958679
And it didn't really matter that the hardware wasn't outdated (which I agree it wasn't).
>>
>>384955298
Atari Box?
>>
was the controller even that bad or just bandwagon hate on it ? I use a cheap logitech controller and while its not as comfy as an expensive $60 controller it still gets the job done.
>>
>>384959137
Controller was not that bad. Software controlling it was, especially at launch.
>>
>>384959325
My home button on my controller got stuck after a few months of use... so yes it was cheap. I'll post picks if you want

This.

It also didn't help that the people running things had no real business model in place. First they were going to give amateurs rapid application development tools to make RPGmaker tier stuff that was easy to distribute. Then they were going to let people charge for game mods. After that they said 'fuck it' and endorsed people to run emulators on the damn thing with a tip jar for willing donors. Things collapsed shortly afterwards.

If anything, the Ouya was the final nail in the coffin for the tip jar model. Now we don't have to put up with this nonsense out of FOSS floppies anymore.
>>
A week after I got my Ouya, and had learned what an utter sack of shit it was, my friends and I took it to a parking lot. We took turns pitching it to one another and taking swings with a metal baseball bat I found in my garage.

The little bastard was surprisingly reliable, and we got like thirty minutes of entertainmnet before the thing was exploded plastic everywhere.
>>

I bought one for my television. I love playing games on my television. Some people play games on a computer, but I think you need to have those games on the television. Everybody loves the television. The Ouya is the best thing and the most amount of fun you can possibly have while using a television.

What is the point of Ouya?
>>
>>384952709
>>384961916

tl:dr they executed the idea terribly and it failed
no reason to try to convince yourselves it was a good idea to invest in it
>>
>>384951359
how's the hardware on the ouya compared to the raspberry pi 3? I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad as an emulation machine
>>
>>384963902
I love the raspberry pi, I don't use it for emulating games however, I use it to go online with my dreamcast. :3

this game SUCKS
>>
>>384963738
I don't think anybody here is really trying to convince themselves this was a good idea.

Even at the time, many outside of its backers were calling it a bad idea. Mobile grade hardware on the set top rarely works out.
>>
>>384952709
It didn't help that their spokesperson looked like she'd never played a video game in her life.

>"games are moving further away from the television"
>"I love the television"
She was fucking crazy
