I liked the idea of having to switch jobs and make different teams for fights. Giving each job it's own sublevel and decreasing your stats for a few battles after switching kills it from being fun.

It just used Job points in the NES version, can't remember if the job levels existed there either.
The main problem with Garuda in particular is that you can pretty much go straight to him as soon as you rescue Alus (when you should find/buy the Dragoon armor and grind it to be useful) and you're walled off from the rest of the world until you defeat Garuda (in addition to the bullshit in the fight itself).
