I played about 5 or 6 missions in AC5 as I was bored to tears. Does it get better? Are any of the other games better?

It does.
And then it falls back down pretty quickly after that.
The dialogue only gets worse and worse as you progress, so I hope you don't have too many problems with it now.

It has the best ending in any AC though. Maybe even one of the best endings in any video game ever
The last three missions are so powerful, both from a narrative and a gameplay point of view

I would agree with you if they'd cut about 60% of the chatter.
Like, let me put this into context. I love Macross 7. It's probably my favorite anime. I am all about cheesy 80s and 90s anime. Ace Combat 5's writing is miserable and cheesy and painful to listen to. Utterly kills the mood.
Infinity does a much better job with SOLG.
