I never said it was bad but I did say none of it really wowed me, which triggered a few anons. The music seems like it will be fine when playing but I don't expect to remember 20+ years later like I do with much of the Genesis stuff.

Problem is Sonic Team is still trying to get Classic Sonic into their games, and they can't hit the mark in replicating the classics. I really liked Generations' classic level design, but the physics were wonky. Forces' Green Hill is like Sonic 4 on steroids, and I actually like Sonic 4, with all the forced boosters and bumpers and extremely linear level design with no sense of speed or momentum off of enemies, like they literally handed it to Dimps. Sonic 4 honestly looks like it plays better than Forces' Classic levels, at least judging off of Green Hill versus Splash Hill.. If Taxman's team could get on the Modern games, covering the Classic side, it'd give Sonic Team more time to perfect the Modern boost formula while being backed with extremely solid Classic gameplay.

I like the special stage's look. I hope that it has some actual slopes and 3D objects to traverse and it's not just a flat surface like CD's because that would be too similar. If Mania's supposed to emulate being on the Saturn then the devs surely would have pushed for more 3D movement at least a little bit. Perhaps at first it starts relatively flat and then later stages will have more complex level geometry you have to get around.

I love the genesis soundtrack a lot more than the Saturn one but being able to remix the same song so many times and use it across the game has a charm of it's own (like Super Mario World did).

I got a good first impression from studiopolis and mirage saloon, and not every track is a winner on even the best soundtracks out there, but it wouldn't surprise me if TL was an average composer. Continuing Unleashed, fun game, Werehog combat isn't bad but the levels drag on for too long. I like the werehog stretchy arm segments though, where you have to grab on to stuff to continue progressing. Overall good and fun game, over Generations but under Colors I'm feeling.

I agree it did play it pretty safe, but overall it was seen as pretty good and in the prerelease of both this game and 4, people thought they were looking at a Sonic revival. To some extent, that was true, though it didn't last too long. Here's hoping Forces and Mania are truly it, feeling very parallel to the hype cycle of Colors and 4.
