Having the pedigree and backing of one of the largest publishers in the industry is what helped Overwatch.

If it didn't have the Blizzard name tied to it, it would've just been another name in the "TF2 participation awards" bin like Brink, Monday Night Combat, and all those other ones I can't remember with Steam player populations in the double or even single digits.

People are making porn and stuff because the characters are popular, not because they're uniquely attractive in one way or the other. People are drawing fanart and fancomics of Widowmaker & Tracer, Pharah & Mercy, McCree and Hanzo doing gay shit together because if they weren't, they'd be gravitating to some other popular series with characters you can pair up. Artists and Youtubers and twitch streamers will just go to whatever's popular. I guarantee you the vast majority of girls writing homo fanfiction about the TF2 cast weren't playing the game even after it went free-to-play.

It actually scares me how good Blizzard is at selling their games. Literally everything is carefully considered. Look at how the cast in the vanilla game is mostly white and attractive, while the post-release stuff is much more about pushing minorities and progressive values. Look at that fucking manufactured Tracer ass controversy and how they held off on her being gay.

None of this was done for SJW reasons or whatever, it's literally all for the sake of catering to the biggest demographic possible without scaring people off. They are always one step ahead and know how people will react. It's impressive.
