How the FUCK am I supposed to get 5 mil in OutRun?

I use high gear and only slow down a little bit on some turns, and yet I'm struggling to make it past the first stage, let alone 3 more. What the fuck am I doing wrong?

Is there some trick I'm missing?

You can get 5 mil just from the 1st stage
Just drive in high gear and break around corners otherwise u'll crash
