I have more hours in 3 on steam with 450. But I mostly played base game dark souls 2 on 360 for like 1000 hours, then another 300 on steam with SotFS. also have 2000 hours of DaS on 360 but only 50 on steam

I really dislike the vanilla das 2 bosses, none offer any challenge, and most can be undone with strafing left. Specially after 3 I simply can't enjoy them.
The dlc bosses I only fought once, on release, so I can't say for sure. but I've been replaying lately, slugging through the mediocre vanilla areas, just so I can refresh my opinions on the dlc areas. Hopefully they are as good as I remember.

I have spent the most time on DS2, even though it's the worst of the three. pcbro here, never played DeS or BB
DS1 was fresh and has the best atmosphere and artstyle. Then came DS2 which I decided to 100%, even though level design was awful, and I clocked slightly above DS1's time spent.

By DS3 I was burnt out by the series' formula and only completed it once, even though it was overall the best of the three. Each of the entries has its strong and weak points, with 3 being slightly above DS1 in overall quality.

I feel like I like DS2 more purely because after its mediocre failures I put a lot of expectations on DS3 to fix shit, only for it to turn out worse in so many ways.
It's completely small shit too like no death/no bonfire rewards, out-of-breath animation, left hand movesets, champ covenant, etc. I don't know why I care about that crap but it just seems bad that they couldn't be assed to implement brain dead shit.

The game clearly needed 2 more years of dev time because they just copy pasted crap from DS1 and BB then phoned in a game even the most staunch DS2 haters agree is shittier than the parents.
Also that linear map is the worst thing ever done to a Souls game, full stop. Online garbage like SM dies, but that map is forever.

Grass farming/spam was a big problem in DeS, DaS mostly fixed it by introducing estus, then for some reason BB unfixed it with blood vials. The biggest problem with it is that it was a problem that was already solved. Same thing with having to use NPCs to level up, DaS's bonfires were a way better system. But said system only existed because they didn't have enough time to copypaste Maiden in Black. So basically he and Fromsoft are hacks who couldn't make consistent innovations to the franchise. Though to be fair that's an issue with Nintendo as well.

I agree, anon. I spent the most amount of time playing DS2 and enjoyed it the most. To this day, that Majula music is super comfy to me.

I played all the Souls games in release order and can safely say I probably enjoyed the gameplay on DS2 and Bloodborne the most.

But I will say, nothing matched the feeling of desperate relief when coming across a bonfire in DS1. It really took things to the next level when leaving the world hub design of Demon's Souls behind.

And to folks saying you can't sink a lot of hours into a game you dislike, I proffer you Skyrim. I think around fifth side quest where my Dragonborn becomes yet another uber guild king, I had to walk away.

Because the interconnectivity creates replay value. You can rush the content and items you want rather than be forced down the same path over and over. Being dissapointed about not discovering "more area" makes no sense lol, the map size is the map size. Once you've played a Souls game though once that sense of discovery is gone. The difference between linear and interconnectivity is that in DS3 you're forced into doing the exact same route every time, which isn't helped by everything being a brown/grey blur. So many builds are cancer because important coals, items and spells are locked in the later half of the game. You may as well just finish NG with a quality straight sword and then use rosaria before NG+.

Lothric Castle - Undead Settlement - Crossroads - Cathedral of the Deep is such a stellar opening, and then I hit Faron Keep and remember that the entire game is hallways connecting swamps.
I mean DS2 has some shit map design but the FotG, No Man's Wharf, Bastille loop is already more interesting pathing than anything attempted in DS3.
