I think the reason he's so slow has almost nothing to do with the controversy. Maybe it bothered him a bit but I don't think it's the main thing. My theory is that he vastly overrates the importance of his videos and thinks that they have to be "perfect". So he keeps wanting to add new things to it and redoing old shit because it's not "perfect". The result is that a throwaway comedy video takes months to make. I also think matthewmatosis has a similar problem even though his videos are very different.
