Persona 4 had an enhanced edition for Vita called 'Persona 4 Golden', which added a new character called Marie. I make it a rule not to skip cutscenes/dialogue on a first playthrough, in case there's some minor detail that I miss that becomes super important later. Of course I fast forwarded through that shit on NG+. Hell, on my third run of Golden, I completely ignored her altogether.

Add to that Makoto's speed is so high she'll always be on the far right in battle (meaning ass shot in your face 24/7) plus a gun that give her +10 stats, it's clear they had a favorite. The obnoxious casual fanbase on Reddit and NeoGAF is just the icing on the cake of shit. She is the entry level girl of Persona 5, by far. Her success is only relative to immediate launch, there are still people playing a long ass game. Makoto like those before her, will be outclassed. It happened with Persona 4.

It's because her arc is terrible and her social link is terrible, and the way she becomes "super-smart super-useful" is by making everyone else in the entire group completely retarded so she can be the mouthpiece for every common sense idea. It's like having a bad LN protagonist introduced a third of the way into the game who completely takes over the group without playing into the group dynamic. I can't count the number of times she opens her mouth and says something completely obvious and all the other Phantom Thieves act shocked because they stopped being able to think for themselves after Makoto was introduced.

It was incredibly contrived and the character payoff made no sense. The entire thing was Makoto repeatedly demonstrating she had no guile, social graces, or sense of strategy, confronting everything in the most direct way possible until it magically worked out. It uses the incredibly stupid phone picture H-doujin blackmail plot device which I already hate because it makes no sense, you're blackmailing someone with photographic evidence of YOUR criminal involvement. So after bungling through an generic smalltime crook by directly confronting the phantom thieves with no plan, directly confronting a bunch of crooks with no plan, directly confronting Kaneshiro after a throwing a tantrum with no plan, and then trying to do it again in the Metaverse, all of a sudden Makoto is the cool tactician of the group.

It's a dick move, but her initial plan of using the PT to stop Kaneshiro is actually pretty smart (using a 'lesser evil' to take down the greater evil), especially since the Principal gives her fuck all support in investigating two cases that should be the police's job to begin with.
Although reckless, her plan during her initial encounter with Kaneshiro was to use herself as bait to get a 'meeting' between him and the PT. She overhears part of their conversation about not being able to get to the Palace, but misinterprets it, due to not knowing of the Metaverse and its rules.

I don't get how they fucked up on Haru when they did Naoto right in P4.

Naoto's the final team member to join, but she pops up throughout the game at multiple plot points to show off her character while (even minimally) engaging with the team in debates. It makes her character less jarring when we save her and she joins us.

Haru doesn't show up at all minus one animated summer cutscene, and even then we don't see her face. Then she suddenly pops up with Mona when he dips, and gets thrusted into the team with little to no character development outside of "I wish my father was less mean."

At that point, there's no reason to suspect they have magical or supernatural powers, and as you noted, she tends to charge into situations tactlessly. There's a good month in between that first confrontation, and the actual blackmail. If the PT wanted to eliminate or brainwash her, they would've done so in that timeframe, instead of focusing on Madarame. Makoto likely reasoned that the PT were real about their justice after Madarame's confession, so blackmailing them would've been 'safe' if she pointed them towards another target that needed to be brought down.

Actually, that's a western concept. Western RPG's tend to have several equally canon endings/paths/romances, if the game allows for that sort of thing. This is because our games are based on D&D where YOU are the protagonist. The player's experience is more important than plot.

This is different with JRPG's where the story is put into the foreground. You play a role in the story, so literally role playing game. In order to keep the plot concise, one ending/path/romance will always be considered the legitimate one while all others are simply options that add up to nothing. The very concept of a bad ending doesn't even exist in WRPG's.

That's true, but I can't help but feel it applies to persona quite well also, because the personality and choices chosen by the player will generate their persona, and the game's "true ending" doesn't seem to specify who's the canon lover nor pigeonhole a joker that takes it into a given role. To some degree I would argue that the players experience of making choices and interacting with the world around them in the context of the set storyline doesn't take precedence over the plot, it literally IS the plot, and there being a canon lover kind of defeats the point in a game about choosing different personalities in the way that the canon ending really doesn't.

It will probably never work out in a game with a time limit, at least when they are somewhat strict. Nothing stops you from reloading your savefile from the previous day to not waste time and there's no real events where you actually make up. Technically you could implement it as way of progression in one, like losing a level of a slink just to get 2 levels when you meet next time or something.
