I stopped playing Pokemon GO a month after it released if not earlier because it was a total piece of shit, but I watched some videos on this event and disaster doesn't even begin to cover it.

Apparently there was a line to get into the event which people started lining up for at 6am. Keep in mind these people had already paid for their tickets. The last batch of people in line waiting to get in got in around 5pm. Five in the afternoon. The people who did get in couldn't even connect to the app because they squeezed 20,000 people into a 0.48 mile radius. When the head of Niantic came on stage, everyone started booing him and yelling at him to fix his shitty game. It was so loud he was forced to respond, "we're working on it, sorry."

Imagine paying for a movie, and waiting in line until 10 minutes until it's over. Imagine paying a lot of money for this ticket, and to add insult to injury, you're one of the few (idiots) who spent a lot of money traveling to the location to be there. Imagine if once you got in, the projector was broken.

Cell boosters are totally a thing. The only problem is the only boost signal strength and not bandwidth. From what i can gather it was basically a DDOS of the cell towers from all the people clamoring to get online and not an issue of signal strength. Refunds or not you also have to note that this event in particular had a lot of ticket scalpers buying GO fest tickets in bulk to sell away to people going to Chicago hoping to get a ticket at a much more inflated price.

Considering that these people thought they could not use the scalpers and just buy tickets at the gate of the event, only to be turned away since it was only pre-sale a lot of players who went out of the way to go to Chicago got nothing in return.

Meanwhile the scalpers who sold tickets at double/triple the amount are getting refunds back from Niantic as well, meaning they will just get more money from this. It's almost sounds like an oceans eleven type scam. It's got to be fucking beautiful for those scalpers.

As someone who used to follow closely to Niantic over the past few years it's really no surprise that things have ended up this way. People will still have hope that they will somehow pull their collective heads out of their gaping asshole but the truth is that it will not happen as they are distant to the global community at large.

The thing to note is that at a time Niantic was capable of doing shit well. They had planned decent events with their previous mobile game Ingress and had great resources at hand not to mention great community to company communication. However this was a different time when Niantic was still in house at Google and when the Global community manager of the game was still alive. The Niantic team at the time consisted of a damn good global community manager, a story/lore integration team, some programmers, and Hanke which basically did nothing but go to game Dev conferences and appear at events once in a blue moon. Under Google they had unlimited access to Google's own shit and an overall decent amount of funding for events allowing free events for all players to go in and participate. The map location data collected alone from "portal submissions" was valuable mapping data for shit like Google making it a decent trade off for the companies.

However at some point the Google/Alphabet restructure happened and Niantic was given a choice to either continue in the same fashion but under Alphabet, or to leave the company and be their own independent company. Hanke ultimately choosing the latter option and breaking up the original team since said team while working for Niantic also worked directly under Google as well. The option for the team was to stay with Google and be relocated to another area of development or to leave the company for Niantic, which as you can guess a majority of them chose to stay with Google.

So Hanke the CEO, the Global community manager, and a few no names split off from Google to make Niantic independent. For awhile their game and events struggled, funding was becoming more of an issue to the point where they added microtransactions into the game and more cross promotions with companies (mostly all in Japan). Events would soon go from being free to now having to pay to go and get "swag" depending on how much you spend to go in. Botting/spoofing only got worse over time and every attempt to stop it was ultimately a failure. The Global community manager passed away not long after which caused more issues since he was the literal voice for Niantic and the means to communicate to the company making sure the players are in good standing. They eventually hired a new GCM which was a player of the game but he ultimately did not fill the same role as his predecessor and eventually just hid away from the community. Pokemon GO was announced, hype was had and it was revealed that Hanke wanted to split from Google because of the potential cash cow Pokemon GO was going to be and wanted to keep that income closer to the company. After a troubling time in closed beta and the team not listening to beta users at all on what was needed to make the game better/fixed they released GO in a graphically more polished but overall unfinished game. The rest can be pretty much remembered to those on the public side of things.
