I think that the point of PC gaming has always been versatility and the ability to tinker around and do things that are impossible on consoles. Sometimes the things that people do and make are useless and sometimes they're genuinely great, but the important thing is that someone made them and the possibility to use them is there if you want to. It's more of an engineer-type of mindset, the stuff is cool because it works even if there is little value in it beyond that.

Unless you're using tap water (don't do that), the liquid you use is usually made from distilled/deionized water which is bretty non-conductive, thus it's not necessarily the end of the world if there's a spill and you can potentially salvage your rig.
