Real talk, I love the shit out of both of these. I was raised on a lot of isometric games but I was sentient and self aware of the entertainment value of video games just as they started being less and less popular, when 3D began taking the market by storm. Being someone who grew up playing isometric games, playing FO1 and FO2 in this day and age was very very easy.

I wouldn't say I think the new ones are better or worse than the originals, because the originals were made in a very different era with a very different goal in mind. I think the new ones are good games in their own right, and to be honest, they are stand-out games, but there's a certain charm that the old ones have that makes me have more appreciation for them. I occasionally go back and replay both of them, doing new things. Can't say the same for FO3, NV, or FO4.

>>384862870
Do you honestly think games in general are getting better? Sure they get flashier, bigger, and louder, that comes with the price of having to cater to the lowest common denominator. FPS games didn't experience any major innovations since Half-Life 2, RPG games because stupider than ever, RTS as a genre simply died, and from its rotting corpse rose MOBAs. Arguably, the only genre to experience a strong change is third person action, but it's a chance towards cinematic experience and slow shoulder shooters. When it comes to indie games, instead of coming up with interesting ideas, indie devs are more interesting with shitting the marker with open world survivals with crafting, minecraft knockoffs, roguelites, and walking sims with pretentious plots.
So yes, older == better.
>>
>>384863910
>playing FO1 and FO2 in this day and age was very very easy.
Agree completely. Those games were kind of a litmus test for newcomers. Coming from SSI gold box games, Wizardry, M&M, Betrayal at Krondor, etc. Fallout games were a walk in the park. Highly enjoyable and well made but quite easy. I would always recommend them to friends or acquaintances who expressed interest in PC RPGs - if they couldn't handle Fallout then the genre probably wasn't for them.
>>

>>
>>384864363
3rd person action is by far the worst genre. QTE, cinematic, shitty story-driven games, Press-X-to-Awesome. It's a shame that so much of the focus has gone to those types of games when other genres have untapped potential.

They put effort into making a good post-apocalypse game that captures the spirit of stories like A Boy And His Dog, or Mad Max, while actually going further and telling it's own, great narrative with thematic cohesion throughout the main story.

Bethesda relies on what they like, and put it in the game without considering any of the background for it. Like Blade Runner, or the first two Fallout games. Compare how Blade Runner and Fallout 4 handled the possibility of the MC being a replicant/synth.The result is a very fanfictiony game that misses what made the first two games good; akin to how you have fanboys go into comics to write their favorite superheroes, and when they do surprise, it's pretty shit because they don't have any unique cultural knowledge or experience to enrich their stories. It's why Steve Ditko's objectivist leanings make for a far more interesting story than some dumbass who watches Doctor Who all the time trying to cram what he thought was cool into a comic.

You play as a non-retarded Brotherhood of Steel off-shoot.
The combat is vastly improved from Fallout 1&2, you can even play it in real time.
You manage an entire party of characters (which can include all manner of creatures like ghouls, super mutants, etc.)

tl;dr it's not as clunky as the first two games.
>>
>>384862792
Yes to your first 3 points and I agree the gamebryo fallouts lacked challenge, but getting bursted 100-0 with essentially no counter play isn't real challenge, it just feels kind of cheap.

They are pretty hardcore games that don't really hold your hand. The isometric (I think right?) view also helps the games out. I don't think the gameplay is great though. It could be better. They are games that are good despite their gameplay. Much like Morrowind imo.

Why the fuck is Fallout 1 high on any of your rankings? It is by far the worst game in the series.

>main story
The only parts of the main story with any depth are the Overseer and the Master. Everything else was just a few lines of straightforward dialogue. Fallout 3 feels like a varied and interesting game in comparison.

>sidequests
Fallout 1 had awful sidequests. Most were just basic fetch quests or base clearing. Reminder that Fallout 1 is the game where you say one line to a guy, accept his quest, get teleported to a base, kill everyone, get teleported back and get one line of "good job". Fallout Tactics had better sidequests and it wasn't even trying.

>combat
Get a gun, aim for the eye, deal one bazillion damage. There is no thought involved in combat, you just repeat the same actions countless times and the enemy variety is very unimpressive. The only reason the combat is any fun is because of the over-the-top death animations; if it wasn't for that it would have been unplayable.
>>
>>384866424
I still like the gameplay more than the 3D Fallouts. Large battles are just clusterfucks in the 3D games.

>Do you honestly think games in general are getting better?

Of course they are.
Not all of the game design decisions are for the better, but this wasn't true in the 00s, 90s or 80s either.

You're delusional if you think that older games are factually better and newer games aren't better overall.
>>
>>384866613
>The only parts of the main story with any depth are the Overseer and the Master. Everything else was just a few lines of straightforward dialogue. Fallout 3 feels like a varied and interesting game in comparison.
Maybe I should have specified setting. Fallout 1 is the only Fallout that really feels like the post-apocalypse to me. Fallout 2 and New Vegas just feel like the wild west, and 3 and 4 just feel like theme parks because they're so unbelievable. In 1 you really get the feeling that humanity's fighting to survive, and the super mutants actually feel like a threat to humanity rather than just another enemy to kill.

>Fallout 1 had awful sidequests. Most were just basic fetch quests or base clearing. I agree that Fallout 1's sidequests are weak, which is why I ranked them lower than 2 and NV, but sidequests like the Glow and killing Gizmo are much more memorable to me than anything in 3 and 4. The outcome of sidequests in 3 and 4 are also not mentioned at all in the endings.

>Get a gun, aim for the eye, deal one bazillion damage. There is no thought involved in combat, you just repeat the same actions countless times and the enemy variety is very unimpressive. You could describe the rest of the series the same way, besides enemy variety.

I finished Fallout 1 earlier this week, it was my first playthrough. I had tried it before years ago, but now I was really playing it. It was good, kinda barebones, but it was good. I started Fallout 2 yesterday and so far I'm enjoying it. It has definitely improved some things such as you now see your money in small money counter screen when talking, your inventory shows your item weight and your carry limit.

Fallout 2 also seems to be much harder than Fallout 1. It could be my character build, but I really did feel like the combat in FO1 was too easy even though I played on normal. I also could pick almost any lock in FO1 with my average thief character.
Fallout 2 is also taking the roleplay few steps further, the choices are not so obvious anymore because there is just so much going on, so much dialogue, and more characters in the first few hours than in Fallout 1 first few hours.

My character, Robert Core (as in, R.Core -> Hardcore... eh?) the master thief and scam artist. My Fallout 2 is named Roger Core, because he's a descendant of the original Core.

I, too, disliked FO3 and NV for their clunkyness. Of course FO1&2 are clunky as well, but they're different kind of clunky. When playing in first person I naturally expect the controls to be tight like in any goof fps game, but in FO3 they're very wobbly and clunky. Also, the character animations suck.
And on top of that, FO3 seems to completely forget what the Fallout games are about. It's too much of a modern toxic green vision of post-apocalypse, and not like the gritty Mad Max post-apocalypse the classics.

Most games have always been shit. New games of a genre APPEAR better because there is nothing to compare and contrast them with. With this in mind I try to look for the really good games.

With regards to FPS. I think Borderlands 1 was a huge innovation and a really good game in both the FPS and RPG genre.
