Before Crisis was Japan-only on old phones that required always online connection, it's literally impossible to play it now even if you wanted and had a Japanese mobile phone from that time period. That English translated YT playthrough (it's from before LP days so no faggot commentary and the player is actually competent) is basically the only way to experience it now.

Vincent has an important hidden sidequest in FFVII that explains some of it. You may want to go back and do that, and while you're at it there's a bunch of other hidden backstory scenes you may have missed too. Go back to the mansion in Nibelheim at the end of the game for the one that deals with the events of Crisis Core.

As for Dirge of Cerberus, yes it's a shitty game, but if you're invested in the story you'll probably enjoy it anyway. The music, story and atmosphere are all done better than Crisis Core and the movie in my opinion, both of which failed to capture the mood of the original game.

The tone of Zack's death is very different between the original game and Crisis Core. In Crisis Core Zack's death is very heroic and almost uplifting. He died a hero like he always wanted. In the original game Zack's death is depressing. He was ambushed in gunned down like a dog while the people who killed him laughed over his dead body and only spared Cloud because they didn't want to waste the bullets.
