If you're familiar with Niantic and the early days of Pokemon Go, this shouldn't be a surprise.

>announce a big event in Chicago last month
>tickets sold out, mostly to scalpers, within a 1/2 hour
>day of event
>40,000 people in the area around Grant Park, Chicago
>Niantic's servers couldn't handle the load and the cell towers in the area were overloaded
>people that traveled across the country couldn't even play the game and complete the "missions" Niantic had for them
>couldn't catch the regional exclusive pokemon in the area
>every time a dev or Hanke came on to the main stage to speak, they were met with boos or pelted with water bottles
>eventually Niantic decided to refund tickets and give players $100 of in-game currency
>however, people with scalped tickets would NOT get the refund/in-game currency
>to save face they decided to release legendaries anyway
>people spent hundreds of dollars just to stand in a park in downtown Chicago all day
