What do you consider to be the first game to have "Realistic" graphics? I would say Half-Life 2

all they did was photograph a bunch of real life surfaces and use them as textures or purchase royalty free ones
HL2 looked worse at launch too
>all those fully modeled bullet chasings
>gun's actions actually move when firing them
>all those particles and action in smooth slow motion
>textures and character models to die for
Max Payne 1 was the Crysis of 2001.

That's really triviliazing things a bit too far.
They were pioneering with the use of Normal- and reflection-maps as well, not to mention the water-shaders and render-2-texture lighting.
Also while the engine was "upgraded" later on, the assets and overall style are very much the same as back in 04.

You have to consider what video games looked like back then, yea, today the textures are kinda crap and the models are just a little low-poly, but look at games like San Andreas
Resident Evil Remake on GC, and Silent Hills 2 and 3 on PS2, definitely were mindblowing visuals-wise as well back in the days.
I remember seeing a new number of some game magazine one day in early 00s, with multiple openings wide preview on REmake, and I simply could not believe they were from a videogame. Literally looked like photographs to me.
There'll never be such a huge jump in game visuals as between 5th and 6th gen, or PS1 to PS2 and N64 to GC.

San Andreas always looked like shit
Doom 3's alpha demo was leaked in 2002 and looks visually more or less the same as it did on launch. THAT was mindblowing. Too bad it took 3 more years for them to finish the game.
