Deus Ex: The Namelss Mod. Really comfy music and the book shop in the first hub is one of the comfiest experiences i've personally had in a game. Nothing like talking to an NPC about Deus Ex lore as the sound of rain on a rooftop goes in the background.

I'm guessing he means games with cozy environments and atmosphere.
Something like, you can go into an abandoned farmhouse during a heavy rainstorm, make a fire for yourself, and there's actually different audio for rain and thunder when you're indoors.

For me it's always been seeing characters go about their regular daily lives, or controlling them. Especially when the characters are normally going through fantastical events like fighting monsters, then just stopping to grab food or take a break.

A good example is Monster Hunter or Sleeping Dogs.

Gravity Rush 2

https://youtu.be/ebEUA9Cz7-o?t=46s

You can control gravity meaning you can fly anywhere and in any direction, which gives a genuine feeling of free movement that makes no part of the map feel off limits. The movement feels great.

The map is a gorgeous set of floating islands with different themes, from parks, to city centres, slums to small towns and marketplaces.

It has some really tight detailing to the world that makes it feel lived in and comfy, and you can even interact with NPCs in small ways by waving to them, singing, and a bunch of stuff.

To top it off the music is a god damn pleasure to listen to with its jazz focus. There's even a guy playing the accordion in the marketplace area that you'll hear if you go near him.

I've 100%ed it (and done the same for the first game twice), but I still go back to it sometimes just to be in its world.

Wish I could find my essential comfy-core image for you OP. But I understand exactly what you're looking for and have been searching for a long time myself. Its a shame that such an word has fallen on ill graces on this god forsaken shithole of a board when its practically becoming its own genre; centered around soothing/relaxing heavily atmospheric environmental interactions. Its hard to describe the feeling you're looking for and the best word for it is Comfy but the key piece to the puzzle is atmosphere. Always look for games that focus sincerely on developing and maintaining tonal atmosphere.

Only two games scratch my itch for the Comfy. Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments (Particularly the case where its raining) and The Long Dark. Stranded Deep also deserves an honorable mention for its merits after you got past the survival stage and manage to get your resources cycling well enough to sustain indefinitely, it just feels like more of a survival slog. While survival is much more of a serious and constant factor in Long Dark, it offers a more intensely forboding atmosphere that forces you to acclimate and make yourself comfortable in dreary environments. When you have plenty of wood for a fire in the stove of a long abandoned house with the winter wind whistling in the distance the feeling comes over you like a thick, satisfying blanket. At the risk of turning a blogpost into DUDELMAO, All 3 of these games degree of comeliness all intensify for me while under the influence of pot.

For me it's color-scheme. More muted ones like in OP's image and >>384826270, are prime comfy levels. Same reason why post HMDS Harvest Moon games are garbage when it comes to comfy due to practically neon-bright everything, compared to earlier titles (Rune Factory and Story of Seasons fixes this).

Comfy atmosphere never gets brighter than a sunny rural day or darker than a moonlit urban night.

What >>384826958 said is true. Being able to relax and feeling immersed in that relaxation is the key to comfy, but for me the pinnacle of it is relaxation in being safe from an otherwise unsafe place. >What makes comfy comfy?
Generally speaking it's a series of cues that invoke associations of the feeling of comfort (which actually is not about the comfort itself, but rather being aware/attentative to our comfort. We are comfortable more often than we realize, but quite often we just don't think/pay attention to it.

While the individual, specific cues that work for people might differ from person to person, here are some patterns that seem to be working reliably:

A) closed/controlable environment. We usually don't feel particularly confortable in wide, highly open environment, because with it comes the risk of losing control and the requirement to pay attention to a relatively large amount of potentially dangerous angels.
This why a lot (not all) "comfy" scenes involve closed, small spaces: a room in a cottage, an interior of bar, a compartment of a train. Constrained light helps this.

B) a contrast element, that serves as a reminder of our comfort (viz the whole "being aware of being comfortable thing). This is usually something that creates a contrast between our space and potentially less comfortable one. Like a rain behind a window, snow/ice on the stills, fog (fog and rain also restrict our vision, and help to establish element A). A view of the vastness of space even can work though.

C) proof or element of a human presence.
We like to be reminded that the environment is suitable for us, and presence of other people assures us of that.
A cabin, a field in the distance, a road. Small clutter around - foodstuff on table, books on the ground, clothes on the chairs, unmade beds, hand-crafted items on shelfs, fireplace. Items related to history work marvels.

D) water.
We really don't like dry places. Rain, fog, a stream, a lake or sea shore on horizon, and of course, manageable greenery and plants.

E) tokens of physical comfort: Again: fireplace, bed, long chair, bottle of wine, cat sleeping. Again, dim lights also serve this purpose.

Fucking pedos. How could anyone get off to the idea of removing a little girl's clothes and licking her tiny body all over, nibbling her neck and kissing her adorable little nipples? Only a heartless monster would think about her cute girlish mouth and tongue wrapped around a thick cock slick with her saliva, pumping in and out of her mouth until it erupts, the cum more than her little throat can swallow. The idea of thick viscous semen overflowing, dribbling down her chin over her flat chest, her tiny hands scooping it all up and watching her suck it off her fingertips is just horrible. You're all a bunch of sick perverts, thinking of spreading her smooth slender thighs, cock poised at the entrance to her pure, tight, virginal pussy, and thrusting in deep as a whimper escapes her lips which are slippery with cum, while her small body shudders from having her cherry taken in one quick stroke. I am disgusted at how you'd get even more excited as you lean over her, listening to her quickening breath, her girlish moans and gasps while you hasten your strokes, her sweet panting warm and moist on your face and her flat chest, shiny with a sheen of fresh sweat, rising and falling rapidly to meet yours. It is truly nasty how you'd run your hands all over her tiny body while you violate her, feeling her nipples hardening against your tongue as you lick her chest, her neck and her armpits, savoring the scent of her skin and sweat while she trembles from the stimulation and as she reaches her climax, hearing her cry out softly as she has her first orgasm while that cock is buried impossibly deep inside her, pulsing violently as an intense amount of hot cum spurts forth and floods through her freshly-deflowered pussy for the first time, filling her womb only to spill out of her with a sickening squelch. And as you lie atop her flushed body, she sighs breathlessly and her fingers dig into your back as she feels your cock hardening inside her again. You're all sick.

None of them are an absolute must. The point is that you will generally find some combination of some of these, more often multiple ones than less often. And again, on top of those there will be a whole lot of subjective, personal-experience-and-association-related things that will really differ from person to person.
Like some people might find the image of ice-hole fishing "comfy" because they have strong pleasant memories of doing that with their father from childhood, while others who never experienced it might find it miserable idea.

But it is actually really interesting how reliable these elements tend to be. Comfort and nostalgia, which is strongly related sentiment, are still statistically very significantly culture-translatable.
It never ceased to amaze me how so many people can find those various kitch images the Japs make - often featuring some kind of slightly historical/anachronistic japanese countryside/small town motives - so strongly relatable. And it somehow works on me - who has been raised in Eastern Europe and has most "comfy" personal memories associated with rainy evenings in sad 50's "Normalization" block of flat, just as much as on american kids who were raised in Arizona shrub-steppes.

Which really suggests that while there is an element of subjectivity - personality, experience and history - there also must be a considerable degree of non-arbitrary and universal mechanic to this.
Feeling nostalgic or comfy about images of places that you have never been too, and don't remind you of anything you really experienced... that is quite a strange thing when you think about it. Especially if you can find imagery that invokes it reliably enough.

Pic half-related, I could not find anything better right now. It's not the best illustration though.

I'm actually trying really hard to recommend something, but I'm just realizing that games rarely do "comfy" to me.

Quite a few do "nostalgic" of some way.
Some rooms in The Void, like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZowmVEYAi8

Some memories of wandering around in Morrowind come into mind.

Some moments of The Witcher games: those interiors in Verden, a lot of Chapter 4 in TW1, some of the moody light in TW3 around Novigrad, but all is rather unspecific.

A couple of rare moments in Alien Isolation - those few calm moments with view of the space.

Venice from The Longest Journey.

The starting city and the train in Syberia.

Some brief moments of calm exploration in Elite: Dangerous.

Coming back to a camp late in the evening after running my ass around in Stalker: CoC.

And that is about all I can think off. Most games that do "comfy" tend to be Japanese or point-and-click adventures, and I don't play much of either of those.

Nah, Tropical really does not do ANYTHING for me.
Not sure why. But I really don't find tropical environments comfortable at all. Not even subtropical ones, to be honest. Italy, southern France, Greece, Croatia, does nothing.

Scandinavia regions, high altitude regions (mountains of both Alpine and Tibetian type), industrial environments, dense urban environments... those work for me.

I guess I like my fog, rain, snow, neon lights, autumn and winter.

Adventure games in general are super comfy.
Just walking around, looking at things and talking to people.

Then 30 minutes in you have no idea what to do and the comfy disappears.
At least Broken Sword is relatively easy and has a hint system.

>>
>>384836509
>Skyrim with Frostfall and food/drink/sleep needs added
>have to keep food with you and ideally cook it, making the shops have meaning
>have to stay at inns unless you own a home in the area, so inns have meaning
>Frostfall's hypothermia means travelling in the cold is dangerous so if you travel too far north or high up a mountain you might be in danger, but taking shelter or being near a fire will help
>every individual journey is so much more meaningful because of these factors and the game basically becomes comfy hiking sim
I can't play the base game at all, just don't find it fun, but I love this stuff.

Possibly worth looking for a mod that increases the cost of staying at inns too as that means you have to manage your money better.

If you're playing Special Edition you can get the stuff I described through the built in mod service Beth has in it so it's literally just picking them off an in-game menu, downloading them and then making a new save.

If it's the original basic version then it's still not particularly complex, there are things that will load the mods for you. Major mods should have instructions that are as simple as "Download this mod manager, load this mod into it, press button, then start playing game."

Grow Home and its sequel Grow Up are pretty great and relaxing.
In Grow Up you're a robot, stranded in an unknown planet with your robot friend and you have to find the parts of your ship so that you can continue your trip.
It's pretty slow at first, but after you get the glider (and eventually the boost glider) it gets really fun and comfy. You can also record and grow plants. Been playing this game all evening, loved it.

Also there's an expression in Japan for games like that, it means "healing game", does anyone remember it?

Comfy is like being a chainsaw-wielding glacier demolisher at a party where the penguins are gonna need a lot of ice cubs.
Comfy is like receiving a phone call from a hallucinating Mike Tyson moments before you're about to kiss the bride.
Comfy is like throwing a bucket full of basketballs as hard as you can at a barn-sized cube of sticky maple syrup Styrofoam.
Comfy is like dropping a bowling ball into a massive cardboard box full of delicious bubble wrap.
Comfy is like poking holes in a watermelon with chopsticks for the best reasons or no reason at all.
Comfy is like using a pizza cutter to eat ice cream.
Comfy is like breathing on a planet where the atmosphere is entirely cotton candy.
Comfy is like asking a brick wall a rhetorical question and receiving an answer that forces you to sit down and think about it for six weeks.
Comfy is like hiring a UFC announcer to shout "Ooh" "Ouch" and "That's gotta hurt!" at your every footstep or use of a hole puncher, stapler, or copy machine at the office.
Comfy is the catharsis of using a jackhammer to cut your birthday cake.

From the looks of it, this house isn't in it's own cell. Basically you don't go through a loading screen to get into, it's part of the over world. Houses like this tend to have odd lighting or nonexistent lighting. Maybe it helps it from dropping the fps too much when you get close enough for it to be loaded.

Running a few dungeons, getting a surprise in the world doing quests, getting semi-unique decor and trying to add it to your house in a meaningful way or hell, just tossing it up in the trophy pile if you weren't full house-autismo as nice banjos(exiles) or violins(dominion) played was the tops.

My Summer Car is great, haven't tried it lately, but was really into it for a while.

Liked the car controls, made driving feel more interesting than the stupid "W to go forwards, S to go backwards"-school of design, more like a proper simulation.. Wish more games would adopt those kind of driving mechanics, they prevent vehicles from being boring.

Rain is comfy because people don't like rain, so they actively try to avoid it whether this means building a fire in a cave or retreating to a home and hearth.
This also tends to make people not go outside so if you ARE outside camping under a rock like in BotW then no one's around, creating a sense of cozy isolation.

Rain is cold, inside your cave is warmth. The body craves contrast

I feel like my ideal comfy scenario is a lot different than others.

I like when the outside is scary and dangerous, but you've managed to make a little home/fort that is equipped to protect you and keep you safe from the outside, then you just kinda enjoy being safe.

It's really hard to find a game that taps into that, base defending, a genuine outside threat, and so on.

Minecraft gets close to this for me, but it's also too easy obviously.

I really like modded skyrim for comfy. All the fur clothing and nice wooden houses.
But the engine is such a piece of shit that you require 200~ mods to get it where you want and its still not perfect and now crashes more often.

But when it works, it's really comfy.
Sometimes modding is the real game.

I find old Goldsrc engine games, usually mods, to be super comfy. Especially if someone creates a house or a comfy room in it. I guess a similiar thing can also be said for Gmod.

Additionally empty multiplayer maps that have a lot of detail put into them, like in NeoTokyo, are really comfy once you get past the uneasy feeling of playing alone.

As for games in particular, the second rest area of Bitterblack Isles in Dragons Dogma is top tier comfy

Not most of it. Seriously it's INSANELY boring landscape 2/3rds of the way. Basically, you'l be staring into a brown shrub-covered slope all the way from Moscow to the borders of Mongolia, which takes around two weeks already.

Only once you reach close to Baykal is it that the landscapes open up and start being interesting.

Also, you have to be dealing with Russians all the way through, and that kinda ruins the experience.
