I think that really applies to their entire game design aka everything orbits around the MC. Sure, this is always the case in story-driven narratives games, but in Bioware games it seems as if the entire world is static and retarded unless you, the mighty player, is there to kick things off.

I don't think gay characters need to hide being gay (unless there's a legit in-story reason for it; I'd be annoyed if the setting had homosexuality punished by death and then I run across a guy kissing another guy in the middle of the town square with no repercussions or anything), and I don't think most people in the thread are saying that either. Gay Tony's gay as hell, and it's obvious right from the start, but I think he's a well done gay character. Bernie from GTA 4 is also gay as hell to the point that he plays a comic gay stereotype, but even that's done relatively well I think since it's heavily implied that he's deliberately putting on the persona to escape his past, which he hates. It cracks a couple of times and you see the man he doesn't want to be any more.

What people claim to hate is when a gay character makes being gay a major part of their whole character. Not their personality, but their *character*, and the interactions WITH the character. But I don't really play enough games of this type any more to know if that's common at all. I know that people claimed ME3 threw gay characters in your face pointlessly, but I didn't find that. The shuttle pilot mentions his dead husband in the same way anyone would mention a dead spouse, nothing wrong with that.

The greater purpose his gayness serves in the narrative is that it's one of many ways he serves as a foil character to Niko. One of Niko's biggest problems is that he's never able to come to terms with who he is because of how the things he's done has impacted his psyche. Bernie went through the exact same things as Niko, but unlike Niko, Bernie was actually successful in starting a new life, accepting who he was and what he's done, and being happy with who he was, and acceptance of his gayness was one of many ways which he did that. This is also the purpose the flamboyantly gay side of him serves, it serves as a vehicle to show that comfort with and happiness in himself that Niko lacks and Bernie wants to engender in him by hanging out with him. It's also why Niko eventually agreeing to hang out with Bernie is so important. Bernie only shows the old side of him when he feels negative, or gets angry or indignant, and when he does, you see shades of Niko in his voice. And Niko is almost always one of those things.

Hello, I'm the only gay character that represents how a normal person approaches their sexuality; by simply trying to win over the object of my affection while still carrying out my day-to-day duties and without constantly parroting on about "how gay I am" or "how persecuted the gays are" or how "I always knew I was different", or delegating my entire identity to my sexuality.
