>Perfectly fine novel
The scene with that purple club and its gravity disco in the trailer? That's some of the most cringeworthy shit I've read in a long time, this is coming from someone who reads fanfictions for laughs. The book is hijacked by the romance plot and the ending is awful. There were a couple moments of interesting corporate espionage, but there's only so much interest you can get out of hearing a kid explain how to get the perfect game of Pac-Man.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want the trifecta of "what the fuck did I just read", then My Immortal, Half Life: Full Life Consequences and Doom: Repercussions of Evil.

>>384815401

An autist made the MMO to end all MMOs in VR. Humanity is slowly crumbling, so everyone's using his MMO called the OASIS to escape how awful it is on Earth. Said autist left a gigantic pop culture easter egg search as his will, so whoever found the ultimate easter egg became the sole owner of his share of the company. Whoever managed that would become unbelievably wealthy and able to control the future of net neutrality on the OASIS, and the protag is just a kid going up against a megacorp that wants that share of the company in order to monetize everything.
>>
>>384815687
Relatively, yes. No-one under 30 is going to get any of the references in the book. Making a blockbuster movie that alienates so many potential viewers is suicide.

that means all writing has to be dumbed down and literally brain dead, equatable to: GUY LOVES GIRL, GUY GETS GIRL AT END. or GUY PLAYS COOL VIDEO GAME, BAD MAN RUINS VIDEO GAME, GUY DEFEATS BAD MAN AT END.

>Teenager Wade Watts lives with his aunt in the "stacks," a poverty-stricken district constructed of trailer homes piled on top of each other. He spends all his spare time logged on to the OASIS as a "gunter" (a contraction of "egg hunter"), an avatar under the moniker Parzival, reading Halliday's journal Anorak's Almanac and researching films, songs, and TV series from the 1980s mentioned therein, as well as playing classic video games. One day, he realizes during a fit of boredom that the location of the first key is on the world of his online high school, in a re-creation of the Dungeons and Dragons module Tomb of Horrors. When he finds the Tomb and defeats its adversary Acererak in the video game Joust, he is awarded the Copper Key, and Parzival's name appears on the "Scoreboard", attracting the entire world's attention, including Art3mis, a popular female gunter and blogger (and the first player to reach the Tomb).

He doesn't beat him in combat, but does it through "SICK VIDYA SKILLS", which he gained by being a NEET with his friends. I forget how he got through the dungeon, but I think he grabbed a copy of the dungeon and basically just geared up. Which is really dumb, because until this point, the book depicts him as a lazy fag who just plays vidya with his friends. Nothing about being physically able, or strong for that matter, enough to get through the Tomb of Horrors.

It has a few interesting ideas, and I liked the corporate espionage bits. It was quite literally a book where some guy shoved as many pop culture references as possible (the main character fucking cites the whole of War Games off of the top of his head), and there's not much else of substance. The other book he made wasn't much better.

Looking at the wiki, I fucked up. If my memory serves me correct, Wade gets a gigantic mansion, where he uses his money to save the world (rather than to create his NEET paradise in space) to woo over his waifu (earlier, she said she wanted to make the world better using the billions of dollars gained from the VR network-thing). They never fug, and the "romance" is spread throughout (they meet early on, and then stick together, but Wade is too autistic to really do anything, I think), but it's implied that he gets the girl at the end.

The main character of the book is into retro stuff from the 80's and 90's. Even though it's the future and there's high tech VR vidya he enjoys watching old films, tv, and games, specifically referencing them by name.

The lead designer of the VR world was also into retro stuff and hid a bunch of easter egg type things based on this. So it's not just memes for the sake of memes, in the book anyways..

I'm reading this novel right now because one of my friends recommended it to me as a joke. He didn't enjoy it but he enjoyed laughing at it with his girlfriend.

It's a horrifically painful read if you know anything about MMOs, warez, or video game history better than the average casual. The novel's basically this weird love letter to 80s nostalgia while being a slightly self-aware parody of people who obsess over the "good old days" of video games and pop culture.

The guy could have definitely used a better editor though. A lot of the dialogue is just terrible and the references are way too surface level for anyone who's been on /v/ for longer than 5 years. I can't imagine anyone older than 20 would enjoy it, though it has a lot of appeal for teenagers and pre-teens who aren't familiar with the subject matter. Also helps that the most "mature" content in the novel is just a bunch of profanity, so it comes across as "edgy" to kids even though it's more sterile and safe than the Starship Troopers novel.

tl;dr you probably won't enjoy it but it's obvious why it's so popular to younger readers

It's like video games as a medium must suffer a fate of being full of either misinformation, shit opinions or lack of knowledge, while a lot of information is being gatekeeped, which is why casuals, game journalists and websites/channels that make content about video games act like they know nothing about the medium: as if it was wrong to explore video games and learn more about popular games, lesser known games, game design, interesting trivia ect.
>>
>>384827231
It has come to my attention that in certain circles, simian-minded individuals are referring to vidcons as 'vid cons', ignorantly placing a space between 'vid' and 'con'. Perhaps their brains have dulled by years of Madden and Quake, rather than mentally invigorating games such as Arc the Lad and Growlanser, because even a child could tell that placing a space between the 'vid' and 'con' in vidcon is perhaps more profoundly philistine than a certain American administration that need not be named.

Placing a space in vidcon completely belittles the meaning of the word and displays the user's blatantly miniscule intellect and misunderstanding of the basic precepts of grammar. Vidcon is a perfect marriage of the words console and video game, creating a short and effective portmanteau that quickly and accurately labels mentioned objects and anybody who does not immediately recognize 'vid con' as absolutely outrageous clearly lacks the mental faculties to correctly operate a vidcon other than perhaps FIFA Sports.

I make this point because I have recently been belligerently barraged by imbecillic 'vid con' references that unnerve me to no end and have taken it upon myself to correct the damage that your poor Western education (though this is a subject to be discussed on a later date) has wrought upon you. You should personally thank me that I did not see it fit to correct your preponderous mistake in Japanese, because I am thoroughly positive your neanderthal mind would be incapable of deciphering the Hiragana from the Katakana.

It's basically built for the Young Adult novel audience, so don't expect anything too mentally stimulating. It's not as edgy as Snow Crash or as interesting as Neuromancer. The dialogue is awful and the references are way too obvious.

That said, I respect how it both tries to honor and satirize nostalgia. The film adaptation is looking a lot better than how I imagined it would be though.

It's not a terrible book. Just keep your expectations very low and it's a good time waster. If you want something more mature and satisfying, I'd recommend "Snow Crash" or "Halting State" even though the first was written by the guy who fucked up his own Kickstarter and the second is written by a batshit SJW. No matter how I feel about the authors, the novels themselves are both pretty good.

Incidentally, the most interesting parts of Ready Player One take place in the real world and very, very little of the plot takes place there. It's a bit of a shame.

Depends on how you frame your expectations, really. I have extremely lenient standards for today's best-selling fiction, especially when it's clearly geared towards younger readers. I'm not going to hold Ready Player One to the same standard as the Sistine Chapel, after all.

If you're expecting something that feels well worth the read and you're over the age of 25, then it's not the book for you. If you're just looking for time to kill, you could honestly do a lot worse than a lot of the drivel I see on best-selling lists. And yes, I know that Ready Player One has an extremely simplistic plot with extremely simplistic characters.

Generation Z is the first generation that doesn't know a world before broadband internet thats readily available in your pocket, who purposely isolate themselves from society. This movie seems a continuiation from that idea, with some goodies along the way that implicate that the marvel/dc universe are actually just games.

>It makes me wonder how many of these were purchased FROM the companies and how many of them were freely given by the companies for a later percentage of the box office.

Actually no, it's even worse than that. The writer makes it extremely unclear how much money Wade has at any given time. After the first gate it seems like he's rolling in money from sponsorships and advertisements, but a chapter or two later he's talking about how he can barely afford to live on an equal footing as other users. Then he's able to magically get the funds to skip town and move into the city, but he has to get a day job as a fucking IT rep to pay for his apartment. A few chapters later, his apartment is filled with expensive computing gear and a top-of-the-line security system and he has a ton of money in his credit account for when he finally decides to break into the IOI office.

The writer's really, really bad at making it clear just how bad his financial situation is. It's a huge problem since Wade's supposed to be an underdog and it's not clear just how poor or wealthy he is in any given chapter.

>>384832442

There are a handful of decent chapters in the novel, but I wouldn't recommend that you give it a try if that page alone was too irritating for you. I had to force myself to get through several chapters due to how painful they were.

That said, I don't think it's as bad (or good) as a lot of people are saying on Reddit or 4chan.

No, but the not-John Carmack guy who starts the contest is clearly autistic and mentally unstable.

Wade is also slightly implied to be a bit mentally imbalanced with his obsession with the contest and his paranoia/anxiety problems, but they're not fleshed out in any meaningful way. Adding some clear flaws like that would have done a lot to making him a much more memorable character.

As casual as a lot of these people are, I don't think there's any harm in a bunch of people suddenly having a shallow interest in 80s pop culture. It's what happens in the novel, after all.

It's also easy to forget that the clan members who are still obsessed with the contest are a relative minority in the world once the novel's events start. Everyone freaked over 80s nostalgia for a decade or two, then most of the world moved on to the shitty dystopia they live in.

There really needs to be a scenario generator that just mashes things together like that. It's absolutely effortless to create something that sounds like it would fit in the novel.

Oh yeah, I expected the social rooms to be as disjointed as your average Second Life hangout (incidentally, I feel like he could have played up the satire on furries and gender swap avatars for laughs and edginess).

It gets weird and slightly irritating when it comes to the PvP zones in the OASIS, where I'm scratching my head at the absolutely arbitrary rules they have on magic or firearms or whatever they have in their loadouts. It made me immediately question just how many MMOs the author has ever played (which probably isn't many, in all fairness).

It's interesting in that the guy who made the VR world initially was very clearly an off-the-scale autist. Like, turbo Rain Man autism... and he lived entirely in '80s pop culture like how some autists live in steam engine stats.

All the young people of this era basically built a Church of Autism around the guy because the rewards for doing so are literally lifelong fame, wealth, and power.

For the protagonist, quoting War Games was 1:1 with memorizing Psalms or some shit.

(Also, the book is fucking garbage and Cline is only famous because he pandered to a demographic nobody had quite stooped low enough to yet, though the REAL Ultimate Power book guy was close)

Don't forget how the girl has a HORRIBLE DEBILITING PHYSICAL FLAW THAT MEANS SHE'LL NEVER BE LOVED (it's a fucking birthmark on her face straight from the UNIQUE AND EXOTICALLY SEXY "HANDICAPS" THAT WILL MAKE YOUR NRRRD GRRRL IRRESISTABLE TO STOCK MCS" handbook.

Don't know anything about the book but am i safe to assume that the main character's avatar is Marty McFly?
>>
>>384843790
Marty McFly has charisma so I doubt it

That wasn't the point. Reddit's been around since 2005, and RPO's from 2011.

How does an autist write a book that rips so many beands and not get sued to kingdom come?

Come on now. Even if literature today wasn't outclassed by the other media, books today are all shit regardless of them being books.

Reminder that cultural sterility is an inevitable consequence of late capitalism as culture is reduced to simply a spectacle to be consumed, one so all-encompassing that rejecting it only plays into it

Reminder that you should read "Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative" by Mark Fisher

It's actually the Halo 5 model

I don't want Halo to be popular again, i'm glad most of the dudebros and normies don't care about it anymore, and what's left of them are just holding the series back even further.

I saw it and I clapped: the book, the movie.
Ready player one is an utter pile of crap, and the fact that it's praised so highly speaks volumes about modern culture
