Virtual reality will never catch on, and the games are on par with an atari 2600. Why spend so much money and then you're telling me I have to redecorate my room just to play some arcade light gun game.

It will though. Eye tracking, hand and finger motion tracking, better games and more affordable hardware and there's no way something that immersing won't catch on

/v/ hates everything, give it 5-10 years and it'll be extremely popular

You can screen cap this

They're desperately slashing prices just to sell units. Of all the people playing video games on all platforms, less than 1% own a VR device. This is not catching on.

I guess consoles never caught on either because they keep desperately slashing prices on those, too.

virtual reality will never catch on mainly because you need a decent amount of room to maneuver in. you can't just sit down and play most VR games.

I'm surprised you know the word ophthalmologists but don't know why looking at screens are bad for you and how the way VR works would actually alleviate some of that.

Consoles have price cuts all time because launch hype dies down and then people with more reasonable budgets pick up a console months/years after launch. VR units get price cut because no one wants them.
>>
>>384803623
they arent. htc even said they're very happy with how many units they sold and still sell for the unchanged price, which is why they're not changing the price at all. (only talking HTC here)
>>
>>384803929
are you american? it shows. your stupidity, I mean. your lack of understanding for other countries. because in literally any developed country (thats right, the US is pretty undeveloped and 3rd world outside of big cities) the value sign goes after the value. it's a simple mistake to make if the US$ is the only one where it doesn't work like that.
>>
They need to normalize it, and make sure more people have one, so developers actually want to make games that use it and so push the technology to its best abilites, rather than unity engine jump scare games
>package it with consoles
>market now knows that VR isnt just used by a small minority
>they develop games for it because they know it will actually sell becuae people can actually play it
as current its more like
>market knows only some people have them
>dont risk making a game that can waste their money by only being playable by a small number of people, and that the game may well still be shit and not sell even to those people
There are no games that make me say "I need a VR", literally none, theyre all cheap throwaway games with the price of admission being more than a fucking console.
>>
>>384807181
So VR are having price cuts because the launch hype died down and people with more reasonable budgets are willing to pick it up months/years after launch. Neat.

no, you don't get it. You redecorate your room so you can have a fake arcade cabinet to play badly emulated roms
>>
>>384807661
In the first place they're only really useful for some games. For example, you might think it is useful for the FPS genre, but then all you are doing is substituting the mouse for your head. Not very accurate and will probably cramp your neck and give you a headache. Or maybe moving your head doesn't affect your aim, in which case now you have to juggle your gun aim and your head aim, which is a UI problem that hasn't been solved yet except in fiction with full real VR. It's very niche and right now the only real games that actually use VR without it being a gimmick are flight sims.
>>
>>384802860
That doesn't argue what he said at all. Why pay for something with absolutely nothing interesting to play on it?

>>
VR is pretty cool, but it needs more games and better/cheaper hardware.
In my opinion it will stay a niche complement for a few genres kinda like a HOTAS flightstick, also for experimental shit of course.
>>
>>384810387
>all you are doing is substituting the mouse for your head.

Incorrect. None of the VR games I've played did this. They use either the touch controller or standard controller/mouse aim while allowing you to look around without the aiming being tied to your head.

I could upgrade my graphics card no worries, but I'd probably have to get a new motherboard if I was to upgrade my CPU which would then mean more RAM and the costs just start piling up. Might as well just wait a year or so until the next generation of VR headsets come out.

My bad. TrackIR has existed for years and worked with Arma without me ever feeling like I was "juggling" head taking and mouse aim
>>
Head mounted displays are part of the future. Whether you like it or not they have great utility and make a lot of sense. Same way tables and such with built in displays are going to be used. Its not a gimmick. Keyboard and monitors and remotes and mice aren't gimmicks.
>>
>>384811620

The problem is looking at VR as a genre. You have to see it as an experience enhancement for certain games.
Like a wheel and a shifter will give you a better experience in car games, or a yoke in a flying sim.

>How it applies to the market as a whole, something-something while I move goalposts.
Half-off relatively new hardware that's only purpose is to profit directly off the sale of the hardware itself is quite telling of how well it's performing and effecting the market. You don't see a half-off Ferrari day on a year-old Ferrari even though there aren't many produced compared to Japanese sedans. It's clear these aggressive sales indicate poor sales performance overall.
Also PSVR to Vive/Occulus is a bad analogue for the market -- PSVR being tied to the PlayStation brand means it has different financial goals than the PC headsets; PSVR is aimed at selling you a lifestyle. Aggressive sales of the PSVR headset should be expected, Sony just wants you in the fold.

You don't see Half-Off Ferrari Day because they produce and sell an adequate number of Ferraris.
Also, the "well you don't need to own roads to drive a Ferrari" is a bad analogue. A better comparison is that all Ferrari owners are also owners of other primary vehicles, while their Ferrari represents a luxury experience that they occasionally take advantage of when not using thier regular commuting vehicle, and 100% of Ferrari owners have other vehicles.

what, you thought it will be an household item like laptops are now? never ever

it's suprisingly alive and developed. vidya library for vive is fucking enormous, and even chinkvr works really well for simulators (when set up properly). volvo VR standard is open, so we already have a single good API that some chinks could start using whenever they're ready instead of making crappy DK1-compatible pieces of shit. I think it'll slowly gain more and more users with time, and that's great since i'll finally be able to afford some old googles through used market when vive 2 gets developed and released
>>
>>384818257
No it's not. It's a perfectly fine analogy:
>Luxury, expensive stand-alone experience purchased by those who already own a vehicle seeking to get more out of their hobby they can't with their existing vehicle.
Just because you tried to make the analogy shit itself with the road thing doesn't make it bad.
It also doesn't change the supposition I made either:
>Occulus tanking in price as stand-alone hardware is different then planned and procedural price reductions and marketing strategy of a console manufacturer selling a subscription, and a clear indication that Occulus cannot sell their initial hardware stock at their asking price.
You need to look no further than the GPU market right now -- Occulus' price drop is pure free market supply and demand, and right now there's tons of stock and no demand.
