I've had discs and cases printed in bulk before and know the price, and the developers could just sell the physical copies on their own website. Even if they have free shipping, it costs like $2 or $3 to ship a game in the US, even then they would still be keeping more of their money compared to selling digitally on Steam or GOG

It's not all down to cost. It's also about the fact that digital distribution is the *fastest* and *most convenient* means of selling games. Don't underestimate the appeal of being able to play a game the same day you bought it even if you don't live near a brick&mortar store.

at retail, the MOST you make back as a dev is 50% of the sale. on steam they make 70%. they can get up to 100% if they distribute a game digitally themselves but they'd have no where near as much visibility as steam offers. EA as big as they are tried their own distribution and still have failed to match what steam produces even with the full return on the sale. this is just a basic breakdown of why his theory would fail, no need to dive into the rest of it.
