An alright, if a bit linear, JRPG. For the DQ series it's somewhere in the middle between the low quality DQs (DQ9 for example) and the high quality ones (DQ7, DQ5, DQ4).
The only thing you really need to know is that the Zoom spell should be used pretty much at all times in the DQ series.

Though I would recommend playing the 3DS version of DQ7 instead as it is at least three times as good (arguably it's the highest point of the series, possibly contending with 5) and it has more interesting combat, job system and story/mini-stories/area vignettes to boot. The first few areas are a bit slow but the game picks up it's pace about the time you unveil the first new island.

Arguably the graphics are worse but honestly the fixes more than make up for it. (and you can be a Jessica waifufag to boot in 3DS unlike the PS2 version)

Personally I recommend maybe looking into III on the snes as well. It would require a fan translation but that should be barely a problem, finding a already patched rom is easy.

7's is pretty mediocre but the first super boss is a good challenge if you're playing the game normally and not abusing the class system.

8 has a shit ton including a story relevant post game area, and a boss rush style dungeon when you beat that. Should add way more play time even if min maxing.

You can get 2 endings with Jessica, one involves marriage. Don't neglect party chat, randomly mixing items is OK for the most part.

Ignore the shitposter about graphics and music, the draw distance in the PS2 version is inferior to the 3DS one. It's not an outright stomp by the PS2 version. There's also free DLC every week that you should download. Max tension makes you into a super saiyan, everyone can do this.

Always be polite to Jessica and make sure she's the one you marry.

As a huge weeb that loves to use the jap dub for almost all games, this is one of the few that I won't do it for. Its got an amazing english dub but I might be a bit biased as I talk exactly like Yangus

DQ7 is a lot more rewarding imo. There you get real interesting content like saving a very religious/spiritual people, only for their safety to lead them to non-spiritual commercialism, and the final return to decency once good has triumphed. And that's just one small vignette out of lots.
DQ8 mostly has it's characters development and the locatinos tend to function more as set-pieces for that and the main story.

As for post-game content both DQ7 and DQ8 have two hard-ish dungeons.
DQ7 is more of an alternate universe deal with fun boss fights.
DQ8 (the 3DS version anyway) has two alternate ending unlocks and further boss fights.

Note that bosses like the bird and marcello on the holy island are considered overworld fights
I think they actually made those fights harder because they expect you to have one or two extra party members
