VR is actually pretty great, I don't own any VR headset yet due to its price but I've used a Vive at a friends house and can assure you it's not a meme.

Have you even tried it yet?

Also, to answer your question, probably when the price comes down a bit. Only 200 to 250 dollars from where it is honestly, I would definitely pay 500 for a Vive.

When the Rift costs it's original price point of $200-300

Which it already kinda does, if you factor in the games and touch controller you get with this $400 sale they're doing which is why I bought one.

I can't wait
>>
>>384791163
Best Buy has stock and are doing the same sale with free 2 day shipping, except they only offer 1 game with it instead of a bunch of tech demos.

You could have it this week.
>>
>>384790786
I didn't fall for the 'x is a meme' -meme, thankfully.

>>384790997
This is a sensible approach.

>>384790938
I'm looking forward to this happening. Interestingly, the guy at radeon has said you need 16K per eye and higher refresh rates to properly simulate real life experience, and with some thought that just about makes sense. However considering the current unsatisfactory resolution of mainstream HMDs, a leap to 4K per eye would make a massive difference.

>Better price point (Looking at $350 or below for headset + controllers, preferably $300)
>Better games for VR that are not just tech demos. Or hell, mainstream games that offer VR stuff that are not just tech demos.
>Better screen quality (I tried it back a few months ago, the screen quality isn't there yet).
>Better cable management.
>Open marketplace that isn't closed off for one particular headset on PC.

I'm intrigued by VR and have a system more then powerful enough to play it, but all the BS that has happened has turned me off from it. I see Occulus not lasting much longer due to all the stuff with Bethesda/poor sales, and it will only be a matter of time before HTC/developers has to decide if the Vive is worth it.

A way better way to do movement. No controller based teleports, no more on rails/stationary games, no more room restrictions.

This sounds far fetched, but it would be cool if they suspended you half a foot above the ground in a motion tracking harness, so your running irl mimics your running in game.

Playing something like Halo/Bf with essentially full immersion (besides touch and smell) would be so kino

Already did because of the sale.

Gotta say, I was dead wrong about it. What I've played so far is pretty mind blowing and I can see why so many people were going all-in for it. It's definitely the next evolutionary leap for gaming and it's quite a large leap indeed.

The damning pitfall of it though is the price and not too many people are going to have the dedication (or even the financial wherewithal if the DID have dedication) to spend this kind of money on something of this nature. I mean, you're talking $800 just for the gear. That's not getting into how much it costs to build a PC if you don't already have one and then the content for it is EXTREMELY overpriced as well (~$30 per 35 minute game, $60 per 1.5 hour game are you serious?)

If not for those price barriers though, standard gaming would be over right now.

I have a Rift on order because I tried it a few times and it was awesome. Certainly there isn't a lot of content and that's a shame, and the most significant improvement I see them needing to make is with the resolution.

I tried out Elite Dangerous and was impressed by the cockpit details, but I hated the combat. All I did was joust with the AI, do a loop, and joust again until one of us died. Are all space fighter games like this? I haven't played a game like this since X-Wing vs Tie Fighter when I was a little boy, so I have no idea if I'm just bad or what.

>>384790786

>>
VR will take off when it becomes the "no brainer" alternative to monitors.

>>
>>384790786
Price. Price is the #1 problem here. It's the main thing getting in the way between consumers. The Oculus rift sale just proves that. It sold out completely really fast in it's first week and even doubled sales for games too.

>>384799910
This, although I wasn't too dead wrong about it. I already thought it really looked great. VR video porn and porn games are fucking amazing. VR is one of the best experience I've ever had for gaming.
>>
>>384800530

>>
>>384800693

>>
>>384790786
Let me know when the thing plugs into my nervous system, reads my thoughts as control input. and projects video feed into my brain. If that isn't possible, let me know when we get some holodeck thing where you can actually interact with your environment.

Anything short of either of those two is just a shallow gimmick that is a waste of time.
>>
>>384790786

Higher resolution. Way higher, 4k minimum, maybe even above that.

You seriously can't admit that there is a lot to be desired from the current state of VR, and you are in complete denial about anything negative people say about it. It's one thing to be excited about what VR can bring in the future, its another to have your head so far up your ass you can't even where it needs improvement.

Good thing you aren't developing it if this is as far as you want to take it.

I don't really have an answer for that. I think what surprises me about this whole VR thing is I'm yet to see a dev do anything really crazy or out there with the tech yet. Even the Kinect had stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH2zzMEBb7E that stretched the idea of what the hardware could do in creative directions. Everything I've seen out of VR so far is your standard tech demo fare. I just want some creativity to show that there's unique and unexpected applications for VR beyond first person and puzzle games.
>>
>>384790786
Real games.

I've heard Resident Evil VII is good but that's just one game.

I know /v/ hates Skyrim and Fallout 4, but those games coming to VR is a good sign, IF they are pulled off well as far as controls and immersion go (hard to have faith in modern Bethesda though)

It blows my mind how many tech news articles and game news articles I see every single fucking day discussing why or why not VR is or isnt taking off when the answer is obvious: There aren't any games worth experiencing yet. When there are games that people see as must play on VR, then people will get into VR.

That means no outlandish prices, no crazy tech specs since no normies will upgrade or buy a whole new computer for it, and it will need other uses beyond just vidya like the whole "shared social experiences" thing facebook was pushing.

Basically, facebook and Oculus ultimately control the future of VR. They're going to have to find a way to dumb down the tech enough for the average idiot to actually be able to use it.

>its another to have your head so far up your ass you can't even where it needs improvement.

I never said it was perfect you dumb shit. I said it's really impressive at it's state. Future tech for it will only make it even more impressive. A lot of people are buying into and even a lot more now that the price went down for the price. Just look at reviews on amazon or bestbuy and many other websites. They're very positive. Does it look like limitations is that huge of problem that it affects the enjoyment? No, as proven by many reviews by consumers. Of course there are desires and improvements. It's new tech after all. It's only been 1 year. Of course people want glove controllers, a wireless set, the ability to smell, and etc. That's just the potential it has and that's great. If limitations are too much of a problem then so many people wouldn't be buying into it and it would be seen so positively. The thing is, even with limitations, the VR set is still AMAZING. Price is the problem that prevents the main consumer from getting it. The Oculus sale is easily proof of that.

>you are in complete denial about anything negative people say about it. It's almost like you have to prove to yourself that it is perfect.

Because what they say ISN'T valid nor reasonable. They either don't own a VR set at all. Their body can't handle VR so, they get motion sickness and blame the VR set when in reality, a lot of people don't suffer that. People who complain about low quality and blurriness are playing on shitty computers with low settings. How am I suppose to take it serious? Your post about VR is a good example of what I MEAN. You're completely ignorant and you take what I say wrongly. Do you even own a VR set? If so, how are you so ignorant with what you own?

It is very tempting. I almost did get it right when I first heard of the sale. I kinda wish I did, since the price went up since
>>
Already did. I tried my friend's PSVR and it blew my fucking dick off. No screen door effect or lens flare/godrays on PSVR, and it looked great. The tracking is shit, though.

I bought a Rift and hope I won't be disapointed after seeing how amazing the PSVR screen looks. The tracking on the rift and free games is probably worth it despite having a worse screen and crappier lens.....

I hope... Anyone in the thread have an Oculus and are the godrays really bad?

It's the games. I had a fucking great time with my shitty DK2. Thing used a single 1920x1080 screen split down the middle (960x1080 per eye) and had rudimentary tracking.

Yet because I played Half Life 2 at my keyboard and mouse and felt like I was actually playing a REAL game, it was a great time.

Now compare this to these new headsets with higher resolution and better tracking. What do they do? They force you to stand up and play with the stupid teleportation gimmicks. Then to add insult to injury, they make you pay $40 for garbage indie games that nobody wants. It's just a sad joke.

Also WTB wireless. They could just render the whole 360° and the headset could just adjust POV locally using the gyro with better latency than wired.

Microsoft already created this with the Kinect 2 and nobody cared. It might help to have one more tracking point at your waist or something, but for 99% of stuff you're doing in VR having body tracking wouldn't add anything. The only place I can see it is in online social stuff like rec room, and even in that having face capture would add much more than body motion tracking.

It seems lot of people want walking/running in real life to translate to walking/running in VR.

That might be interesting for certain types of short games but if you intend to play a game for a few hours, it'll soon become quite tedious to have to walk or run everywhere.

Imagine some sort of D&D game where you have to walk or run everywhere. After few hours, you'll wish you could press on a joystick to make your character move in the game.

all the porn is shitty model-viewers with maybe a tiny bit of customization. The only game that caters to any fetish is Yiffalicious, and that's fucking furries. We can't even get a normal human vr game with fisting or futanari, despite how simple each would be to implement.

Your verbiage clearly illustrates the image you're trying to project on me.

I spent money on a game that looked enjoyable. The game unfortunately had major flaws that prevented me from even playing it. I rescinded the money I spent, in hopes that the game would later become playable, where I may reallocate my funds back to the game.

Good games that actually require VR to be experienced.

And I don't mean "it's only available on VR platforms."

I mean "I literally could not play this game with a controller and TV"

Probably impossible.
It's for the best.

VR will never truly be the next step in video games until we have sensory inputs beyond sight and hearing.
We will need smell, touch, taste, and all the other perceptions of the human body to be satisfied before VR is truly an experience we can't have elsewhere.

Right now, it's just a very fancy version of the Virtual Boy.
A display attached to your face and a controller in your hands.
