Out of all the N64 games, SM64 is one of the very few I consider to have aged well and not made completely redundant by a superior entry on a later console.

I think a big part of this is the feel of Mario himself; He carries momentum and weight. There is a genuine sense of fun in just controlling him.

In addition, the structure of the missions is bar none the best in the genre. It avoids the pitfalls of DK64 where collectibles are a binary list of objectives; Use this move on this pad, and then use this move to jump to the big-ass tower it spawned on top of. The solution is static and never changes regardless of who's playing.

SM64 is far more organic in this regard - very few Stars have one single solution. The game trusts you to figure out how you will get the star, and the level design complements this; The levels are sprawling and open with plenty of different routes, yet each route is meticulously polished and planned out.

Now why SM64 is the only game in the genre to get this essential shit right is beyond me

Agreed. You get almost 0% control of your mid-air momentum. Mario will try to climb down ledges if you're too close to them when you start moving, you have to back up and THEN accelerate. When sliding down a slope you have awful controls and the game physics will randomly fling you off at incredibly high speeds for no reason. Wall-jump only works about half the time. Wing-cap is absolute ass I have no other words for it, it is such a huge step down from the cape in SMB world.

The Dark World/Light world mechanic always drains me, I preferred the more straight forward adventure of Prime 1. MP2 did have the better bosses though. Quadraxis and Emperor Ing are some of my favorite boss battles period.

I haven't played the game properly with the N64 controller in over 12 years, did try to emulate it on PC last year and the game is harder and annoying with a keyboard.

Got myself a Switch Pro controller so I might fire up this emulator again. I think most analog sticks should work just fine.
