I think the worst part is that they didn't start by making their own engine especially for a game that's supposed to be revolutionary. What were they thinking by using cryengine in the first place? Did they started using because it looked pretty?
>>
>>384789421
I think some publisher would pick it up because there's clearly some interest in this game.

Basically yeah, Chris Roberts game "freelancer" on the OG xbox said it looked like shit. So he wanted his next game to be pretty as possible.

Hey, if you wanna dump your money in an unfinished product with no content because it looks pretty but runs like a huge pile of shit, go on. That one desert gameplay was running at 40 fps and it was running on 2 SLI 1080s.

Why would all 100 star systems be in the game so early on? This doesn't really say anything beyond estimated development time is pretty damn off, but isn't that usually the case? Seems most devs undershoot how long things take to make.

there won't be 100 star systems in the game dude. they plan to launch with 5 now. a 95% reduction in the systems the game will have.

If you paid for this project you got ripped.

Star Citizen sells "ships", this means it is P2W and with P2W I mean extreme P2W.
The whole "world" could be huge, but this has a few problems: The fps will be shit even on high end pc in 4k. Look at Overwatch for example. Overwatch is praised for its great performance. If you look closer you understand why Overwatch looks great, because there is nothing wich is graphical intensive. Overwatch is polished with its small maps to only use as many assets as necessary and every interaction in Overwatch is made flashy to hide that they look bad to save performance.

Star Citizen is more like Mass Effect Andromeda and look how bad the performance is in MEA. Sure, the MEA team are a bunch of sjw who want to kill all white people, but they are still using Bioware's top engine. The huge performance problems are because of how demanding open word "galaxy" games are. Sure you can just make a game like MEA use only less view distance and other things to save performance, but then the game looks shit.

Also the content of Star Citizen will be shit. Look at games like GTA 5 who have so much money invested. Even these games are lacking content if you finished the main content. The world is not really that big (compared to Star Citizen), but even this "small" handcrafted world gets boring fast. I don't know how big Star Citizen should be, but if they want to simulate real world sizes like No Mans Sky, they either will never even finish one world with cities and other things, or they just use a boring algorithm which will make the game look like a boring copy paste.

The game sounds so HUGE, that even 2 billion burger dollar would not finish 1 percent of the game.

tldr: The game is pretty much a flop since day 1
>>

You replied this hard to a fucking shitpost. How sad is your life right now? pretty fucking sad i'd say.

I don't understand why /v/ is bashing a game that admits needs close to a decade of development for being unfinished.
I don't even know if Star Citizen is gonna be good, and I sure as fuck won't ever give them money, but I'm curious about how big can you make a game if you give it close to 15 years (or however long it's gonna take iduno) of development. That's kind of the whole point of it I feel, and the only thing that makes it interesting.
>>
>>384795787

roberts was a liar when he was around for freelancer.

and now he's a liar around for star citizen.

he has already REDUCED THE NUMBER OF SYSTEMS PLANNED FOR THE GAME BY 95%. holy fucking shit.

do people who bought ships honestly have faith in this man? there are two outcomes to selling ships. either the ships will be locked behind the most ungodly of grinds, doing repetitive missions for quest contacts (just how many unique missions are there going to be when the contact is mocapped and voiced?) or mining. OR they will be quite easy to get in game, which in turn will make the people who dumped hundreds and thousands into this game incredibly angry. because be honest, most of them didn't give that money to roberts out of the goodness of their hearts - they expect to curbstomp every little tiny shit in the game with their beefed out battleships.

and you can buy money in game too. did everyone forget that? you can buy in game credits but there is fuck all to actually spend them on KEK.

Depends though. Since there (should) is a element of player skill involved rather than a simple number game and that element is (should be) bigger than normal MMOs (there is one even in those but is more "what to click and when" rather than what could be described as skill in a action game sense), the P2W aspect might be less of a impact.
Example: two kind of "fighter" ships, one is better than the other, doesn't mean the better ship will win since the other player might be a much better pilot or able to better use the eventual environment to his advantage.

It's amazing just how long it's taking. Even with their "modular" format it's been five years and what do they have to show for it? A model viewer, a flight tech demo, and a generic FPS with a space skin... Absolutely nothing of note.

Meanwhile, Project Titan began development, got cancelled, turned into Overwatch, was developed again, and got released, and has had dozens of updates, all in the time Star Citizen has been delayed over and over.

The NIntendo Wii U was released, lived, died, rumors of the NX surfaced, the NX was revealed to be the Switch, and it was released, and in all that time, Star Citizen has produced nothing noteworthy. A physical piece of hardware with new technologies took less time to make than a Freelancer clone with P2W ship mechanics.

When Star Citizen was announced, Barack Obama had yet to win his second term and was yet to run against Mitt Romney. Romney hadn't even been nominated yet.

At this point, the Syrian Civil War is going to end before Star Citizen comes out. Think about that. An actual, physical war - a grueling civil war with heavy foreign intervention - will be completed more quickly than this fucking video game.

Has there ever been a game with this long and unproductive of a dev cycle, that turned out better for it? Even once in history? By a well-funded studio with dozens of employees all over the world, no less? How anyone can pretend this is "normal" or "good" is just beyond me. It has to either be post-purchase bias or just a massive troll I fell for, I can't imagine it's anything else.

I do think the biggest ship aka the Javalin looks kind of ridiculous but keep in mind that is only the "white box" pass and it is in no way meant to represent the final product.

You have to consider though this is the first project from the studio. Blizzard already has day to day stuff like source control, build master, staff meetings, asset pipeline, employee hierarchy, etc already solidified from past experience. While these guys are essentially just winging it.

tbqh, if you're really at the point that you're "just winging it", asking for millions of dollars and taking bank loans against donation money is pretty scummy. You can't make a big budget MMO/RPG/FPS/simulator with indie-tier development while "just winging it", that's how you end up in development hell
>>
I really don't know if I want this to succeed or fail.

If it's the former, I get a great space game with seamless FPS/ship controls, something I've always wanted.
If it's the latter, the shitstorm will be one of epic proportions, possibly overtaking TORtanic, and there will be one hell of a story.

Same here, but I have a feeling it will come out with many promises unfulfilled, with much disappointment, because the devs were forced to release it in order to remain solvent after spending all their capital. Then after a ten year long post-development cycle (twenty year dev cycle in total I guess) it will eventually build itself up to something respectable. But will always be tainted by its release and the shitshow prior to it.

Best thing I think it can do at this point is try and invent new paradigms for later, better-managed games to build on.

Not gonna be a TORtanic desu. So far the meme has mostly been the long dev time and over promises. At worst you get a Molyneux effect. Where if you go into fable games blind they are pretty gud. We have noticed the speculations created by a posting on the website of UK’s Company House with respect to Coutt’s security for our UK Tax Rebate advance, and we would like to provide you with the following insight to help prevent some of the misinformation we have seen.

Our UK companies are entitled to a Government Game tax credit rebate which we earn every month on the Squadron 42 development. These rebates are payable by the UK Government in the fall of the next following year when we file our tax returns. Foundry 42 and its parent company Cloud Imperium Games UK Ltd. have elected to partner with Coutts, a highly regarded, very selective, and specialized UK banking institution, to obtain a regular advance against this rebate, which will allow us to avoid converting unnecessarily other currencies into GBP. We obviously incur a significant part of our expenditures in GBP while our collections are mostly in USD and EUR. Given today’s low interest rates versus the ongoing and uncertain currency fluctuations, this is simply a smart money management move, which we implemented upon recommendation of our financial advisors. The collateral granted in connection with this discounting loan is absolutely standard and pertains to our UK operation only, which develops Squadron 42. As a careful review of the security will show and contrary to some irresponsible and misleading reports, the collateral specifically excludes “Star Citizen.” The UK Government rebate entitlement, which is audited and certified by our outside auditors on a quarterly basis, is the prime collateral. Per standard procedure in banking, our UK companies of course stand behind the loan and guarantee repayment which, however, given the reliability of the discounted asset (a UK Government payment) is a formality and nothing else. This security does not affect our UK companies’ ownership and control of their assets. Obviously, the UK Government will not default on its rebate

Planetside 2 I used to only play about 200 player sized battles. (as in fighting in the same area)
Guild Wars 2 doesn't have a player count in WvW but I would say 100 people in a zerg vs zerg is a good estimation.
Old source engine games like TF2 and CSS could accommodate 64 people.

It is looking to me like 64 people would be a high mark for Star Citizen.

If the game succeeds it will peak after a couple years, die off and only be brought up in discussions in of old vidya "that that was a pretty good game." If this fails however it will cause long term market trends (kickstarter type things would probably be greatly damaged) and the drama would be talked about for decades. Think of the memes.

To everyone complaining about the poor FPS, the QA team is not running top of the line hardware. They are running low to mid range hardware (Above the minimum required). They are likely on higher than recommended settings so that they can verify that the LODs are working properly. Additionally, optimizations are still being worked on. When the game was announced there was a design but there was no code for the actual game. It is about where it should be for the scale of the game that it is. Squadron 42 however, is much more than what you see here. CIG has not shown anything yet but we might get a peek at it during GamesCom.

They didn't entirely
>get rid of him
like some posters said. They just stepped in and removed total control from him, ensuring there'd be a game at the end of the day. Amazing we got what we got, usually the big corps mismanage development but in this case they did exactly the right thing. If Roberts would have had complete run of the show there wouldn't have been a Freelancer and the studio would have gone under, or released a game with random features at random development states.

To all you Star Citizen Fans: I can understand you getting invested in the game, there's nothing wrong with that. But can you not see the issue that some people might have with alot of the details surrounding this game?

First off, paying massive amounts of money for in-game ships. Now sure, you can argue that this isn't pay2win because you can get the ships in-game, but how long do you think it'll take to get enough money to purchase one of those ships? How much grinding do you need to do to equal 10,000 dollars of american burgerbucks?

Second, the financial issues surrounding this game are suspicious. There are rumors that the company had to take out loans and is now owned by a bank, there's screenshots of star citizen devs wasting thousands on trivial crap like coffee machines, and we still don't know where it's going.

Third, release-wise, I don't even know if this game will ever come out. How long has it been in development? Sure, good things take time. I won't doubt that. but a delayed game will not automatically be good, nor will it mean that it'll even come out. It just feels like you guys are paying for perma-early access.
>>
>>384833580
there is no ten thousand dollar ship. you have been milsed by /v/'s retarded ramblings. the ten grand thing is a megapack of all the game's ships and says right on it that it's only there for richfags who want to throw shitloads of money at the game, and for their generosity they get to skip any and all grind. the design of the game is such that big ships are actually a logistical nightmare, and even if you paid hundreds for one without an effective crew someone is just going to take it from you.
>>
>>384831714
thats fine, but then a lot of you make massively seemingly well thought out posts that shit all over the game, but they dont actually even make very much sense

Its as if you all are heavily emotionally invested into the idea that this game is a scam

its really strange, there really is no other explanation other than a lot of you being terrified consoles could be blown the fuck out, or that you just need a reason to shit on people and are starting to become afraid you could end up being wrong all this time and would have to realize all your hateful shitposting was really for no reason other than to deflect from the meaninglessness of your own lives.

so you lash out with anger, as cognitive dissonance happens each time the game is shown to progress, because your brain is struggling with the fact that you're so convinced and invested in the fact that it will be a failure, while its actually shaping up to likely be pretty cool, and is already better than some "finished" triple A games released for an even higher minimum price, which are bought by millions

>>384833580
>Second, the financial issues surrounding this game are suspicious. There are rumors that the company had to take out loans and is now owned by a bank, there's screenshots of star citizen devs wasting thousands on trivial crap like coffee machines, and we still don't know where it's going.

oh yeah, a good coffee machine for his employees, its totally a scam, chris roberts master plan is to just hire a bunch of people and give them expensive coffee and cool doors and furniture to hang out in and pay them a living wage to code as little of a game as possible, even though its arguably already innovated more than most games have in the past decade

because that makes sense
>>
>>384833580
>There are rumors that the company had to take out loans and is now owned by a bank, there's screenshots of star citizen devs wasting thousands on trivial crap like coffee machines, and we still don't know where it's going.
more retarded shit that never happened. there was actually a clarification of the bank lie earlier in the thread, and the coffee machine thing is pure speculation ie someone found a coffee machine that looks similar online and assumed the price on some website is what CIG paid, as well as assuming they bought it new rather than second hand, etc.

believe it or not, there is a cabal of retards out there more desperate to bring this game down than the average /v/tard and they come up with 99% of this bullshit.

>>
>>384836228
which was the promise they failed to deliver on? over the last four years they've met and exceeded every goal they've set, the only drawback was they missed deadlines to do it, which if you were paying attention was the entire point of eschewing the publisher model; so they could make the game they wanted without having to cut features to make seasonal release times and keep a corporate board happy

Im not sure if its their intention to leave it like that but most MMOs design playermodels to clip entirely through each other

Have you ever played any MMO?

Otherwise players could block other players from doing anything simply by afking in a doorway, and crowds would cause more issues
>>
>>384837561
it's pretty fucking obvious the guy goes off to one side. see PC games have the ability to adjust something called the 'field of view' and it can be disorienting for console players but basically it widens the area you can se, making it seem like things are closer to the center of the screen than they are.

>Should it really considered an MMO when they've been unable to put more than twenty people on-screen at once?

That doesnt change the fact that if players couldnt clip with each other it would allow easy trolling and some slight tediousness where players would be getting stuck because another player ends up in the same hallway in their ship as themselves and have to back out and go around or tell the other person to move

maybe later when people actually take the game seriously and communicate more they'll feel it wont be an issue, who knows, who cares, the better question is why do you skeptics often sound more invested in this game than people who actually paid money for it?

its kinda sad

You're the one who gave it a pass because that's something other MMOs do, not me. All I'm saying is that it's hardly an MMO and even if it was I don't think it's the kind of game that should so easily blow off something like player physics. I'm barely a skeptic, I entered the thread, dropped my clearly spicy opinion about a webm that I saw, got accussed of samefagging and now I've got two turbo nerds freaking out at such a blasphemous statement. actually i remember now, the game doesnt let player models entirely clip through each other, but yeah it wont make you get stuck on another player model just because you bump shoulders, theres some give and clipping maybe, its not really worse than having the models fully simulated and getting stuck on each other and unrealistically pushing each other horizontally

>>384839696
yeah i havent been into any since nearly vanilla WoW, aside from this i guess if you would call it that, it isnt an MMO yet obviously, but will sort of resemble one eventually i guess i would hope.

Im not interested in all these same shitty MMOs where you spam buttons on a keyboard with cooldowns and wait your turn for your character to attack. So fucking unimaginative.

>>384839986
>You're the one who gave it a pass because that's something other MMOs do

because it makes sense to not have your player models not be getting completely hung up so easily on each other when the premise of the game is based on having up to quite a few people in often tight cramped areas, like corridors in a spaceship

it's mostly about the fact that they don't want to deal with the restrictive legal model of consoles, wherein you have to pay big bucks just to publish patches, which they want to do pretty regularly to keep content fresh. it's why TF2 on consoles never got any of the wacky hats and shit; Valve was not willing to pay to publish all that shit. that, and they aren't willing to scale anything back for the console's sake.

all the replies to you are ignoring the main point you make. You are right when you say:
>Also the content of Star Citizen will be shit. Look at games like GTA 5 who have so much money invested. Even these games are lacking content if you finished the main content. The world is not really that big (compared to Star Citizen), but even this "small" handcrafted world gets boring fast. I don't know how big Star Citizen should be, but if they want to simulate real world sizes like No Mans Sky, they either will never even finish one world with cities and other things, or they just use a boring algorithm which will make the game look like a boring copy paste.
true open worlds arent possible for the forseeable future. it requires too much to run on a persons computer and things will get repetitive fast.

isn't eve like 100% player content? the difference is this game is intended to eventually be like 90% NPC driven or that's the intention, also the basis of it is EVE Valkyrie style play, and there is intended to be a ton of single player set dressing at the very least, maybe not largely pvp in the final game, but it will be the majority of the content for the upcoming release.

I'd say the dev attitude towards "griefing" is pretty similar to eve, the major difference would be you can/have to physically sneak aboard other people's ships and shoot them in the face to shenanigan them hard, rather than awox tomfoolery. also there won't be major player territory control for the most part, the main areas are NPC faction owned, with lawless space for pirate clans to try and vie for supremacy.

like I said, all the stuff in the 3.0 vid is from longer footage you can find elsewhere and even see in game right now in a lot of cases. the NMS trailers were carefully crafted to hide the cracks, while CIG has gone to great pains to show off how nothing is faked. at their last citizencon event they went into the editor and showed exactly how they make everything for example. Mr Smileyvein from Hello Games made up bullshit about how the environment was composed of different chemicals that changed their colour and other such total lies.

do yourself a favor and don't listen to /v/. they do free fly weekends and occasionally full weeks, there's all but guaranteed to be one in august, and you'll be able to judge the game on it's own merits for free when that happens.

I might just wait until they release a full product of some kind and then reassess at that point if i want to buy or not.

feature creep
SQ42 will be a final product rather than being expended on, thus they will not release it until all systems are ready

The shitty thing about these threads is when anons who actually have a semblance of interest in the game show up such as >>384850334

the 'full release' will be completely arbitrary, since everything they build gets put into the game as soon as they deem it finished. at some point three years from now they'll say it's done enough to call a game, but the rate at which they build it out won't change.

the animation looks quite good but the cinematography is awful

I'm not gonna condemn the game completely because of things that you say are rumors, but I would like to remain suspicious at least until the game leaves early access. I've seen too many games stay in EA for decades, and never really improve. Heck, a game I used to look forward ot, Project Nimbus, is STILL in early access, with no future in sight.

as someone who's been playing since it was nothing more than a static ship model in a hangar you could walk around, it's improved pretty dramatically, even from the initial dogfighting module. you are of course entitled to your opinion.
