ADS was unnecessary, as were the handful of other little gimmicks, like sliding and the stupid clamber animation, they added this shit just so COD kiddies would want the game and it didn't work. Turned out no one wanted it, and they turned off core fans with both those changes and a lack of staple modes and features.

No local MP, no local co-op, no splitscreen online, what's the fucking point? If I want yet another online-only shooter, I have plenty to choose from already that don't require I buy a $300+ paperweight to play. Switch doesn't have Halo, but I will get one eventually. Custom games, campaign, forge maps, etc. Now its just online, you're missing half the functionality. You can setup the exact same game offline or online, the MP has those two primary functions, and one is now gone. LAN is gone too, because who wants to use their own local network, amirite? Pony up for that XBL sub instead!

I don't care how improved the MP is (It wasn't, it doesn't play much like Halo anymore and they made a number of changes in an effort to appeal to a wider, younger audience that is used to playing games with those features) when I can't fucking use it the way I want to use it. If all I can do is play online, by myself, then I don't want it. I want to have friends over to play, I want to setup LAN games, I want to use all the other functionality EVERY PAST HALO GAME has fucking had until Halo 5. I could stomach the gameplay changes, I played Halo 4 plenty, but cutting local play was over the line.

You underestimate how important it was to "casuals" and people who did in fact buy the game with the intent to play locally with friends or family, especially the campaign. The Amazon reviews were flooded with people lamenting the lack of splitscreen right after launch some people even bought the game not knowing it was taken out, because they expected it to be there like it was in literally every past Halo game ever.

And I think this goes beyond Halo and MS, it touches on long-term value and the perception of consumers. People are more likely to stick with games that have more to them. Past Halo games and stuff like CoD stuck around because they had more to do than play online, by yourself. Games like Titanfall 2 died off quick because there's fuck-all to do if you don't want to play online. No custom games, no map editor, no local play, nothing to do but the (solid) campaign by yourself or pay to play online. Publishers are just after that quick buck, they don't seem concerned with making long-lasting games with value when they get their money the first week anyway.
