This really. He started great with the whole rivalry. But near the end of the Genesis his popularity really fell. The issue really is they marketed him too much it seems. Where Mario kind of showed up in things like Punch-Out!! and Golf it never really felt like it was forcing him in it. Where Sonic had tons of games outside of 1-3. With everything being named Sonic. It was quickly over saturation on the Genesis. And once Sega seem to have no clue on how to handled Sonic after Genesis fair weather Sonic fans just left.

I mean Sonic only really staying power right now is nostalgia which I guess is enough.

Probably the most popular character in all of video games during the 16-bit era. Mario's games were better though and everyone knew it, which is why Mario World sold better than any Sonic game.

You're making the mistake of thinking not realizing the sonic vs mario thing was about a very specific age group.

No one past the age of 13 argued about which cartoon character was better, at least back than. Now a days though people do that well into their 30s.

There was what, S1, S2, Spinball, CD, S3&K, and also a few Game Gear games, S1, S2, Chaos, and Triple Trouble. Maybe count Mean Bean Machine.
Through the entire mainline life of the Genesis (so, up to 1994), Sonic sure as hell wasn't over represented.

after Sega basically dropped the machine because lol Saturn, Chaotix was in 95, 3D Blast in 96, and that's the whole lot of them
and the actual issue is that instead of a main Sonic game on the Saturn, we got Sonic R and a 3D Blast port, there wasn't much reason to keep caring about Sonic after 1994 when Sega screwed up completely with the Saturn

Not for lack of trying, sega's mistake in making the 32x and releasing it the year before saturn as well as the development hell for sonic xtreme is what led to that. If it weren't for the 32x existing and the saturn being the sole focus we might have gotten a much more successful console with a great mainline sonic game.
