I think this is a good idea on paper and a terrible idea in execution. Everyone has a mobile phone and the switch is portable, so using it as some kind of wi-fi hotspot for online play makes a lot of sense I think. All they'd need to make this system alright is to have the mic plug into the switch and the phone connect to the console via Bluetooth. I can see the appeal of that.

As it is, it just serves as a middle man and has no obvious benefit for the consumer. I wonder if it was just to add a barrier to entry for voice chat because Nintendo seem terrified a kid is gonna get abducted after playing one of their online games.

I think the biggest thing is that Nintendo doesn't understand how large their fan base is in America. While they only think about their fans in Japan. Phones, PSPVitas, 3DS' and so on are actually really popular compared to America. They are more about mobility than we are. Which I can understand. No it fucking isn't. It's a terrible fucking idea. The only thing your phone should do is handle the hot spot. The switch itself should be handling everything else. Off loading a big component to online gaming to another device is absolutely not user friendly, especially when it's a device most people consider important. To lock that device down and then drain it's battery is not a fucking good idea on paper.

I guess it depends on how much the voice chat demands from the console. In the case of the switch where performance and battery life is already an issue while portable, they thought the inconvenience was worth taking some of the strain off of the console.

There is nothing about this that makes sense on any design scale. If Nintendo wanted to get around their battery concerns, they should have included a quick charging technology USB-C port to support external batteries that are already out in the market, easily available, and specifically designed for power users and situations like these. at that point, you would only have to worry about one cable and one battery while your Switch handles the rest of the chat a matchmaking functions on its own like it should have on the first place.

And this is strictly all regarding a portable scenario. It barely makes sense in a portable environment. What in any of this makes sense in a home environment?

There is no merit to this. The solution has been around for years and already proven to work with Vita. This wheel did not need reinvention. This is not some uncharted territory that needed to be looked at again. It was fine and perfected by other platforms for years now.

Fair point, though I'd happily sacrifice some phone battery if the alternative was more of a performance downgrade on hand held. I'm not sure if that would be the choice but I'm just trying to see why Nintendo would be so set on doing it this way.

Like I said, badly implemented. That's not an issue with the idea of using your phone to supplement the power of a portable console, it's how it was used in this example.

In fact a lot of the things you raise here come down to implementation. Have chat coming from the console while docked, for example, and you solve the issue with using the phone at home.

I never played the Vita but I'll look into how it used it if you say it did it better.

Sometimes things need to be played around with before they find their niche and I think making use of the tiny computer everyone has in their pockets to supplement other tiny computers is a neat idea.
