Nier Automata was an inversion on Drakengard 1, both games are about fighting an automaton-like army (the red eye infected soldiers in dod1, the machine lifeforms that also get red eyes when they are taken over by the network) commanded by a higher power (God / the machine network). Dod1 is about God wanting to destroy humans, Automata is about post-humans trying to build a god. Drakengard and Nier is about the downfall of humankind while Automata is about the rise of new post-human life forms.
Honestly it wasn't perfect but it definetly works in the context of the series, all of the games have some issue or another, dismissing it just because normies like it is retarded

I'm not dismissing it because muh normies; I still liked it, the problem was you absolutely couldn't discuss it properly at all. Aside from that though I felt the plot just went nowhere. Everything important happened in the backstory and the characters had little to no influence on anything. We didn't even get a proper cinematic of Ending D (whichever one 9S's was). At least in Drakengard and Nier the characters actually influenced shit. Also I didn't really care about them because at the end of the day they're robots, and not particularly interesting robots at that. It's why I didn't much care for the Beepy thing in the first game.

I've two weapons to go until ending E in Drakengard. Fuck both of them. My first Taro game was Nier:A.
I actually think Drakengard is a decent game, even gameplay-wise but it hasn't really given me any Taro feels. Manah and Seere were sad but everything else has just kind of passed me by.

Well people talk about despair and sadness and everything when it comes to his games but Drakengard really does not get much of an emotional response out of me. Like I said I think it's actually a decent VIDEO GAME and the writing has kept me intrigued from start to finish AND the game has made me more interested in his other work, but I do feel like I'm missing something.
The only emotion I've felt during all of that is anger because SHUT THE FUCK UP VERDELET STOP BLOCKING MY MINIMAP JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. But arguably, that's what the game tries to do to you. That's why it's so good.

Drakengard is more about how absolutely bizarre it is, and the slow descent from generic bog standard fantasy hack n slash into batshit insane demon babies than being depressing.

They are very different games.

You also have to look at Drakengard from the perspective of the era, where this type of great fantasy hero butchers tens of thousands of mooks was very popular. A big part of the appeal is how Drakengard attempts to deconstruct it with Caims character.

So any tips on how I'm going to get Scream in Drakengard? I can get to the Cyclops with about 1.5 minutes left and with 75% HP consistently but those fuckers just keep spamming and never let me attack them. I'm either going to kill them at under 5 minutes but with less than 50% HP left or with over 50% HP left but over 5 minutes. I've been trying to save magic for them too but that does jack shit.

Or Phisopher's Staff for that matter? My standard tactics of A) use Moonfire and spin around spamming normal attack or spam early strong attack depending on the enemy B) use Windsinger magic and run through enemies neither have any chance of succeeding under 6 minutes. And I don't have many weapons leveled up.
