I enjoyed it. 100% the first game and loaded the file in the second game, then 100% that as well all just for the red tuxedo ending that lasts about 5 seconds.

Wonder Boy is pretty much a standard metroidvania style. Goemon is another series with an interesting structure though. Usually they have town segments where you can explore and then side-scrolling action stages. The town areas often have minigames and stuff you can play.

Both are great series though, definitely give them a try.

So how does Tomba stack up to the likes of Joe & Mac, Klonoa and Chuck Rock?
