Both are important in their own way.

DMC3 is a great example of the two working together. Most bosses in the game are huge monsters that look and move nothing like you. But then suddenly you fight Vergil and it's exciting because oh shit, he can do everything you can do.

But the kind of giant bosses that just stand at the edge of a platform and slam their fists down fuckin' suck.
