What the hell is GOG? I kind of understood it when I used it to download Thief, but I was also wondering how they got the license to give away Thief for free. Then I saw you can download Strafe on GOG. What the fuck is GOG, and why do they give away games for free?

It's a game store like Steam, exept they don't use DRM so they just give you an installer that you can save and install whenever and wherever you want. They bought the licence (it's an old game so they didn't pay much probably) and giving away games gives them publicity.

This. Steam also gives away free games, it's not a big deal.
Are you new to the Internet?

So GOG bought a bunch of copies? Do they ever run out? Why do people buy Strafe on Steam if they can get it on GOG? Is this the copyright owners version of a pay-what-you-want release, like so many musicians do now?

"I would like a free copy of each Souls game, Steam. Thank you."

It's a different website. You're buying a different version of the game to the one that appears on Steam.

Okay, but do you know what happens with copyright owners, particularly those who want to make money? Why do they license a free version of the game?
nobody knows?
