Crits really do become a problem when you get better at the game. When you're new, a random crit will be maybe 1 death in a hundred for you. But when you have 3000 hours of experience, you die much less to normal pub-level combat and those bullshit crits become 10% or more of your total death count.

It really depends on what crate/case. The Rainy Day case is still fairly new. If you were to get the Plumber's Cap, even non strange and non unusual, you would still be able to profit from it because it's so new.
As for the actual odds, I don't really know. The best type of crate/case to unbox are the ones that hold new cosmetics, taunts, or new weapons (not too likely anymore).
