I'm pretty sure the only problem was that they didn't have the actual level designers from Kazooie/Tooie. They hard programmers, directors, artists, but no level designers. The "designers" they picked up never worked on a 3D platformer.

They made some pretty serious rookie mistakes. The first one being that notes in Banjo Kazooie were to help you understand which areas you've been to already, but in in Yooka Laylee they hid them from the player.

You don't even need to be an "expert" to realize that.

Modern consoles are more than capable of making something cartoony look that good. It's just most choose to go for realism which is a resource hog, say what you will about the quality of recent Sonic games the Hedgehog Engine still makes games look great even on Nintendo's shit hardware

This looks like the most awful creepy uncanny valley ass shit I've ever seen
there's lack of detail in most areas and then this photorealistic fur texturing, horrible lighting, creepy ass hair and eyelashes and plasticine eyes, the lighting and colours are awful and muddy and there's a lack of contrast in areas like diddy's hat and 90% of the background

I have no clue why people treat it as anything other than dogshit unless they just grew up with it or something

Yoshi's Island is ear rape the game, stop pretending it isn't. It's really sad how everything else about the game is god tier, especially the music, but the sound effects are horrific.
