Well including them, its also cause a characters design IS their selling point. They dont have the luxury of having players engrossed in backstory or their moves explained to them. Everything about them has to not only catch your eye right away but tell you a lot of the character herself, what kind of moves she has, her role, her personality, etc.

Sure this is thr gist of having good character design in anything, its just that more essential to this genre.

I think story and context is essential to making a good fighter since they decide the backbone of your playable cast. Its just when one says story, you expect something like cutscenes and mountains of text instead of having the story told in game. This is probably why the tournament format is popular for fighters since it makes anyone feel like the main characters.

Sadly Capcom has always made it a habit to blow their amazing accomplishments by making stupid decisions almost instantly after the fact. The "Darkstalkers is not dead" fiasco really made this noticeable considering for a digital only HD/netplay re-release of a game that was already re-released more than twice at that point, The Darkstalkers Collection sold unrealistically well. But Capcom was under the impression that they were going to get AAA level returns on this.

That's the real tragedy with Capcom. They make amazing things when desperate or under pressure, but the second they have an inch, they systematically destroy what they just made. SFV seems to indicate their inability to fight back against it anymore. If they're going to make any kind of return (which I think can be reasonably expected) we're not going to see it for a long time.

Speaking of GG backgrounds, there's some interesting details in a few of them that often go unnoticed. For example, in GG1, the Paris Cathedral stage, Testament's Castle Stairway, and the Gates of Heaven are all connected by the stairs, leading from the base of the Cathedral.

These are always the last three stages if you're playing as Sol or Ky, and the whole thing is an elaborate reference to a "Stairway to Heaven."

Another neat bit of stage trivia is NYC (Sol's stage, he grew up in Manhattan). While New York was hit hard during the Crusades, the statue of liberty survived, albeit on it's side. You can also see the ruins of the city in the background in GG1. Each time NYC appears as a stage in GG, the city is slowly being rebuilt. The statue of Liberty is also upright again in Xrd Sign, although it's still being held in place by construction restraints. You also might notice a futuristic city in a dome like structure surrounded by a desert. That's because the US East Coast basically looks like the world of Trigun in GG. With various futuristic cities and towns across it. Sol himself has a safe house in the desert wasteland that is the Boston Seabed.

In GG Slash, there's a flashback stage to the Crusades simply labeled "A.D. 2172", it appears to be a train station with the corpses of Megadeth class gears strewn about after a battle. The same stage makes a return in AC+, except at night with rain and fire everywhere. There's also fresh blood from the corpses on the ground. Both of these stages are the same place as the reoccurring London stage and they even use the same perspective as it did for Axl's stage in GG1.

Haven't seen one in Dragonica falls, but I haven't really looked yet. Another thing to note for Xrd is that the stages change based on the round and even have specific conditions for extra things.

For example, the Revelator version of Faust's stage; "Downtown" will start with a few bystanders watching the fight. In round 2 there are much more bystanders, there are two bellhops in front holding up a sign reading "NOT HERE PLEASE" and "NOT AGAIN" (referencing the first time this stage appeared in Sign) and Illyrian knights have set up a blockade around the fight with swords at the ready. They'll take a warning stance if you go close to them. By round 3 there will be much more knights and a paddy wagon at the ready. Interestingly enough, out of all the bystanders, only one has a clone of himself for crowd filler (nervous looking man in a flat cap and red vest). Also the knights will not take an aggressive stance if Ky goes near them, because they're his backup.

This was finally revealed in her episode mode in Revelator. While everyone who works for Asuka is someone suffering from some kind of one of a kind anomaly, we find out that I-No herself is an anomaly. Basically she thought she was cursed to drift through a time loop where she can't really change anything without any memory of who she is or where she came from. The Backyard is basically just the "source code" to the universe as some kind of organic computer program, and magic is basically using "informational" leaks from this dimension to perform "lifehacks" normally information there is one way, but because the Crusades were a brutal, 100 year period where mankind lived desperately and faced the possibility of extinction every day, a huge volume of "information" from our universe ended up in the backyard. This information was humanity's collective will to survive. When it reached the backyard, it then processed the information and made a life form as a result. That life form was I-No, who is basically a human created directly from this "source code" or put simply, a Valentine, except made by humans. This also means she can't exist in any other timeline where this didn't happen. She basically learns that she can have almost infinite power over time because of this but she also learns that she's 100% guaranteed to be trapped forever in her time loop with no hope of escape. Where she left off in Rev2's after story is that she's about to go on a despair fueled rampage.

It's interesting because she was surprisingly nice to Axl when she helped him realize that he was split between two timelines and the next time jump he makes will erase the timeline he doesn't choose. He basically accepted the fact that he will never see his girlfriend, friends, or family again because he knew that they'd accept him even if they knew he had to make such a horrifying decision and he didn't want them to have to do that. So I'm hoping Axl will come back and help her somehow.

Basically I-No realized that she's trapped. She also lashes out at Raven because while his immortality is bleak, he always has the option of just waiting to see what happens next. Hence Raven's slight perspective change at the beginning of Afterstory A. Basically everyone either got a happy ending, or still has some kind of hope to cling to. Except her.

I miss it too, the closest we have is the Draconic Falls in Revelator. The Xrd series looks great, but I miss a lot of the grit the old ones had. I would absolutely love them to remake some old stages in the new Xrd engine. Cause it's wack that the only ones really doing that is Capcom and they do it with usually only SF2 stages. I'm not sure why they keep making it worse with each game. Especially since Soul Calibur (used to be) sitting right next to Tekken with it's customization with even 3 laughing at what Tekken 7 can do.
