It's strange to me coming from primarily a fighter background, but who has a massive interest in DBZ. To me this game is almost perfect and I'm glad only certain characters have transformations/installs. However, I can see as someone who is more casual that it might be disappointing considering every other DBZ game has had transformations out the ass. Everyone says their roster is the best, but this one is truly the best. It considers multiple angles for each character, has a reasonable roster size, and has very very little personal bias in it. Consider the multiple mechanics of the game. Like super dash flying, teleport kicks, and ki blast button. Certain characters like Master Roshi or Bulma cannot do these things and no technology would help them be able to. I will admit Videl is a bit of a stretch, but she can snap vanish and fire ki blasts in other games so it's not to unreal to expect it here.

Yeah, but that’s how life goes sometimes. Sometimes defeat can lead to a more profound victory. He lost the hunt for the Dragon Balls, but he overcame his fear of women all by himself in the process. If he’d gotten his way, Shenron might have made him more comfortable around girls, but he still wouldn’t know any girls.

Granted, his relationship with Bulma wasn’t exactly a brilliant success, but he hung in there a pretty long time. Nothing lasts forever, and failed relationships can still be valuable experiences. A lot of people would have loved to have his kind of love life at that age. (Including Vegeta, by the way.)

Losing to Jackie Chun at his World Tournament debut was no disgrace, seeing as Chun defeated all of his other opponents. That was the point, since Roshi only played the Chun persona to show his students that they could still be beaten, and thus inspire them to keep improving. And this was Yamcha’s first real introduction to Master Roshi, who went on to become his martial arts teacher. Winning the tournament might have been a feather in his cap, but it would have bypassed an important relationship in his life.

Tien broke his leg at the next tournament, but then Tien went on to become his best friend. Again, if he’d won the match, I don’t think he’d really be better off in the long run.

Losing to Kami at the following tournament is no shame either. Really, it was something of an honor once he knew who he’d been up against, although Kami kind of stopped being a big deal a few years later. You also have to balance his loss against the time he spent preparing for it. All those filler episodes where he hung out with Tien, Krillin, and Chiaotzu. I’m sure he was disappointed to come up short at the event itself, but I don’t think he felt like a loser, you know?

And that brings us to his infamous battle against the Saibaman. Was he overconfident? Probably. I think the more important thing was that he showed up to the battle at all. Not that long before, he was a loner who only cared about himself. But there he is, ready to put it all on the line with his closest bros. And he beat the Saibaman, fair and square. It had to destroy itself to kill him, and unlike the Saibaman, people actually mourned for Yamcha. His life mattered.

That’s what Dragon Ball is really all about. The evildoers might be formidable, but no one’s going to go out of their way to wish them back when they screw up. Yamcha went from a self-interested bandit to someone people care about, and that’s why he doesn’t sweat his win-loss record.

Notice that he received the same honors Goku did when he died. An audience with King Kai, permission to keep his body in the afterlife, access to the Grand Kai Planet. Not too shabby.

Just to compare him to Vegeta for a moment, I think the telling point about Vegeta’s victories in DBZ are that they kind of ring hollow for him. You know that fan art of him standing over a pile of all the characters he killed? Most of those guys weren’t even trying to fight back. There’s Namekian villagers and comrades like Nappa, and all the Frieza goons who were no match for him. He killed Recoome and Burter by attacking them after they’d already been beaten. Fair kills like Android 19 and Pui Pui were quickly overshadowed by the graver threats they heralded, like Cell, Dabura, and Buu. It’s an impressive pile until you know the details.
