Dying should have a punishment anon
>>
>>384695125
Unironically this. If a game has a hardcore "die and lose everything" function as an optional feature, I never turn it off.
>>
>>384694391
just like in real life
>>
Perfectly acceptable if it's mandatory for horror games.
Should be optional for anything else.

I'm not opposed to this type of game but I prefer games where permanent progress can be made.
Games where you will make run after run at an objective but over time your character gets a little bit stronger or has a little more health or whatever.
>>
>>384696274
How about your skill at the game? Is that not persistent?

If the game is good enough, you don't mind restarting hundreds of times.

Games with checkpoints are so boring and repetitive that they know they can't make you replay one section, or you'll start to notice all the flaws. Smoke and mirrors.
>>
>>384694391
Games that do this are usually balanced around it.
>>
For tension.

Games that don't punish you for dying don't place stress and motivation on the player.
>>
>>384696384
of course I really liked Enter the Gungeon because I could feel myself getting better at it. But in a game like Crypt of the Necrodancer you not only get better skill wise but can cash in special currency (which you can only really get more of by getting better at the game) and give your character permanent upgrades.
>>
realm of the mad god, do people still play that?

I dont understand people who plays co operative games such as Terreria, Starbound or Minecraft and elect to drop all items on death.

YOU KNOW you are constantly in proximity of the other character a lot and when you die they are going to pick all your shit up.

Then what? You just spent hours collecting all that shit. I seriously think only stupid people do this.
>>
>>384694391
Games overall were meant for fun buddy.

Stop being so serious
>>
>>384694391
Death should have consequences.
>>
>>384694391
>die
>spawn a few feet away with nothing lost
What's the point? Why even allow the character to die?

Games like this exist so that there can be consequences for playing like shit.

Better than modern games that all have Super Meat Boy checkpoints and the quickest way to progress is to just trial and error over and over like a retard until you figure it out rather than find the solution with the game's mechanics.

If you want a "Lose everything but not quite EVERYTHING" game, check out Desktop Dungeons.

That's what chests are for. You're not going to be carrying around all your diamonds and precious ores with you. You'll lose your armor some food and whatever you were mining.

I think thats why people prefer either softcore mode, or hardcore mode. Trying to elect a middle ground just leaves a poor taste in your mouth, since dropping items is just inconvenient, nothing more. What I like about hardcore is that it rips away any permanent status effects you have on your character, like health and mana boosts.
>>
>>384694391
Stop playing roguelikes if you don't like them

What's that movie called? is in a cabin in the woods where a group of friends play a game x-box-esque and what happens to their characters, happens to heir real counterparts.

I've been searching this for a long time ago
>>
>>384697672
Terraria doen't really work in modes other than softcore, it's a chore to have to organize your stuff everytime you die, if you log off after you die without picking up your stuff everything dissapears and the mobility accesories are so important you might as well kill yourself if you have to get your stuff back without a replacement set.

I don't mind it that much in Minecraft because even if you lose your gear you aren't going to get one shot by enemies like in Terraria when you reach hardmode.
