Actually, later in the story SS Link does become the "appointed knight", too. It seems to be the new "lore" that is being established after SS.

If you could make a direct sequal to ANY of the past Zelda games, what would it be?

I would actually like a continuation after the events of majora's mask with the Hero of Time. A visit to the same Hyrule from OoT but bigger and you can run into many of the old characters.
